VFW free lunch program starts Jan. 24

By JAMES PHILLIPS,

The members at the local Web Memorial VFW Post 4974 in Forest will sponsor and host a free lunch program on the fourth Thursday every month beginning tomorrow. VFW members believe in giving back to the community and came together to offer this program to bring veterans and community members together for food and fellowship.

Post members originally discussed holding this monthly free lunch for local veterans, but after further discussion decided they would like to invite the whole community to partake. “At our monthly meeting we were discussing starting a monthly fellowship day and during the discussion one of our veterans suggested opening the monthly events to the whole community,” VFW Post 4974 Commander Gary Robinson said.

“We first discussed including just veterans, but we decided this was a great opportunity for us to give back to the community and our neighbors by inviting everyone in the community to join us on the fourth Thursday of each month.”

The free lunches will be held each month from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and the members look for these monthly lunches to bring people of the community together. “Our post is about honoring veterans and giving back and coming together as a community,” said post quarter master Tom Wilson. “There is a dire need for community outreach and to be better neighbors in these tough times and we are looking to do our part to serve the community.”

The VFW members are looking to also reach younger veterans and new members through this community outreach program. “Over recent years our numbers here at the post have dwindled because of the aging of our older veterans,” Robinson said. “Through these community lunches we are hoping to reach younger veterans in the local area and let them know of our presence.”

The members of VFW Post 4974 believe the only way to combat tough times in this country is to come together as a community because fellowship, love and togetherness will always prevail. “This idea was originally thought about to reach more veterans in our local area, but it became clear that we needed to do more for everyone in our community,” Wilson said. “After it was discussed and decided to make this a monthly community event the members here have ran with the idea and we look forward to hosting our first lunch Thursday.”

The veterans of the VFW are connected through a strong bond formed through service to our country even in the worst of times and they are looking to put their bonds on full display to the whole community. “All of members here are veterans looking to be better neighbors and a better part of our community,” Robinson said. “We believe it is part of our duty to do our part and bring as many people together as we can and this is a good first step at achieving that goal.”

Wilson said that they are aware there may be veterans or community members that would like to attend the VFW free lunches but may not have access to a ride, or may need help getting to the post. If there are veterans or community members that need a pick-up to attend the lunches they can contact any of the members listed below and they will work to make accommodations for those individuals.

“In the past we have had several programs centered around our local veterans but we are looking forward to including the entire local community,” Wilson said.

The free lunches start this Thursday, January 24, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Webb Memorial VFW Post 4974 on Hwy 80 West in Forest, directly across from King Lumber Company.

If anyone needs additional information, would like to RSVP or is in need of a pick-up to attend the lunch they can contact: Gary Robinson 601-507-7800; Tom Wilson 601-497-7353 or Billy Alexander 601-507-3307.
