In the world of physics, when the mutual action by which bodies or particles of matter tend to draw together, it is called attraction. In terms of human feelings and emotions the same thing happens when we encounter something of beauty or charm or fascination, we feel the power of attraction, and we usually go after it.
During the time of the first church, the majority of Jews and Romans persecuted Jesus Christ and His disciples. But, some were attracted by Jesus and his group. “None of the rest dare join them, but the people held them in high esteem. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women.” (Acts 5:13-14 ESV) Those who believed in Christ started growing, and they have never stopped because the church is still growing after more than two thousand years. Thanks to the Holy Spirit’s presence, miracles, and many signs, Christianity continues to attract people.
However, the church should be more attractive because for many new generations, worship is not interesting. There is more attraction to the cybernetic world and the many digital devices involved, and God usually is ignored because, the world is fun. As a matter of fact, it is easier to satisfy the mundane than obey God and to be faithful. There are, however, many churches, with good services, bands, good singers and eloquent preachers who really worship but, it is not enough for many that are looking for excitement and recreation.
For all who are ministers, there is a constant challenge in order to serve God and to attract unbelievers and accomplish our mission. Not too many Christians are conscious that we have a great commission to accomplish. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of God and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you.” (Matthew 28: 19-20a ESV).
Some people are attracted by the church but often times nobody give them a welcome. The discipleship then, is always necessary, because they are people who still don’t understand what it is to give their lives to God. It becomes very easy for them to turn back to the world. It is not easy to leave the comfortable life and live honestly, being obedient, humble and loving others. They should know that it is the only way to have real change in their lives and that the other things are little more than decoration that God will not consider.
We Christians believe that God heals, and His presence gives us strength and builds good character, so that when problems arise, we can confront them in the right way. This is the moment in our lives when faith gives us victory and the Word grows roots giving us peace. Believers and unbelievers are attracted by God’s Word and our faith makes us free.
May God bless you.
