State relaxes social distancing measures in Scott County


Last week Governor Tate Reeves announced the launch of the Back to Business Mississippi Grant Program website to help small businesses receive financial support quickly to recover from the economic impacts of COVID-19 and at the same time removed the mandatory face masks in public guidelines for Scott, Leake, Newton and Atalla counties.

Our community joins in mourning the death of George Floyd


Our prayers are with the family and friends of the late Mr. George Floyd who was killed by a law enforcement officer in Minneapolis who detained Floyd with his knee on Floyd’s neck.  Earlier this month, we commemorated the lives of James Green and Phillip Gibbs who were killed by law enforcement officers at Jackson State 50 years ago.

Barnes named STAR Student

The Mississippi Economic Council and the M.B. Swayze Foundation has announced that Morton High School’s STAR Student is Garren Jackson Barnes.

Barnes is the son of Dan and Marsha Barnes of Ludlow. He is the grandson of Jack and Peggy Barnes of Ludlow and the late Dick and Martha Livingston of Pulaski.

Senate Report


This week at your Capitol, the Senate began with a hearing on the budget outlooks for the fiscal year.  Unfortunately, the outlook is bleak for the months of March, April, May, and June.  As expected, the sharp plummet into the current recession has caused substantial shortfalls in the expected revenues. We heard from State Economist, Dr.



2019 in review

As we welcome the year 2020 today, we will reflect back on the eventful year of 2019. This past year saw Scott County get national exposure and attention in August for the HSI/ICE raids on three local chicken plants.

Election Results

The following are unofficial election results for the party primary elections on August 6 released by the Scott County Circuit Clerk’s office. There were a total of 6,673 votes cast in Scott County during the primary election.

City of Forest’s curfew/shelter-in-place order will remain in effect regardless of governor’s decision for the state


In a delicate balancing act between the state’s economy and public health due to the COVID-19 virus, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves will announce later this week whether or not to let his shelter-in-place executive order expire on Monday or extend it for a second time.

Forest Parade


Christmas parades were held in three of Scott County’s municipalities in the last week heralding the holiday season. Pictured, Community Bank of Forest claimed top honors in the Forest Parade’s Red Division. Second place went ot Bank of Forest and Third place was claimed by Lackey Memorial Hospital.
