Just when I thought it couldn’t possibly get any worse, it is getting worse! This presidential campaign is just getting dirtier and dirtier.
I thought it was bad enough when Joe Biden was still the Democrat’s candidate, but noooo, I was wrong. Now that Kamala Harris is the nominee, it seems all gloves are off. Or all muzzles are off might be the better choice of words.
Last week, former president, and very possible future president Donald Trump visited Arlington National Cemetery for a wreath laying ceremony honoring the members of the military that died when the U.S. withdrew from Afghanistan.
Some saw that as political grand standing when he used video of the event, held on some of the most sacred military ground, on the social media platform TikTok. When Harris said something to that effect, vice-presidential Republican nominee J.D. Vance said something the equivalent to “if she doesn’t like it...she can go to hell.” Yikes! I don’t ever remember talk like that in the past actually intended for open mics.
I’m certain they all say similar things behind the scenes but really, saying it to our face is a bit too much for me.
Then reports began to emerge of social media posts by Trump with vulgar sexual references about Hillary Clinton and Harris. Good Lord! I did look it up...and read it...and I hope his handlers that said he probably didn’t read the caption, but just saw the picture before posting are correct.
We’ll never know for certain, but Google it and decide for yourself if it is, or isn’t, inappropriate. If you are easily offended you probably should not do that.
Some of the Democratic candidates’s supporters, I’m sure, are saying, and doing, some of the same things through the back door, and we just don’t get to hear about them since they aren’t done in a public setting.
Yet!
It is way past time to get back to the issues. The economy, the border crisis, this dang hot weather — whether you believe in climate change or not — the things presidential candidates should be talking about not all this other nasty bull poopoo.
The same thing is going on right here in Mississippi and we’re still years away from the next gubernatorial election.
State Auditor Shad White, love him or hate him, seems to think he can say anything about anyone he wants. White, like several other current office holders, has his eye on the Governor’s Mansion.
A Mississippi Today review from his just released book “Mississippi Swindle: Brett Favre and the Welfare Scandal that Shocked America” reports him doing all kinds of name calling and finger pointing.
In addition to calling Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch “Lazy Lynn,” and claiming State GOP Chair Mike Hurst “was not a particularly good U.S. Attorney,” Mississippi Today Politics and Government Editor Geoff Pender writes, “White describes Phil Bryant as having ‘rugged looks…a thick head of perfectly coiffed gray hair.’ Gov. Tate Reeves as, ‘rosy-cheeked with a full head of blond hair.’ DHS Director John Davis as, ‘now a paunchy, balding man with a penchant for flashy ties and decor.’ A younger defendant Nancy New with ‘big hair and a Cheshire cat grin.’ Defendant Zach New ‘still looked like a Southern Miss. frat boy…a permanent five o’clock shadow and wore some beer weight around his face.’ Mississippi Today reporter Anna Wolfe was ‘wearing big, horn-rimmed glasses and hair that occasionally changed colors.’ An aide to Davis was ‘callow, still sporting his college haircut.’”
I have not written a book, but in my book of the brain that’s all just a bit “weird” which also just happens to be the term the Harris campaign has been using of late in their name calling campaign against the former president.
And to think, I thought it couldn’t possibly get any worse...or weirder.
I fully expect it can, and will. Probably already has. Buckle up y’all, it is a long time between now and November 5 — and it will have seemed a lot longer when it is all over and done with.
Trust me.
