Our community is saddened by the death of Mrs. Mary Lois Evans Clark who died after a lengthy illness on April 16th at MS Baptist Hospital in Jackson. Memorial services are set for Saturday, April 27th at 11:00 at Greater Deliverance COGIC. Her visitation is Friday, April 26th from 12 noon until 7 at Evans Memorial Funeral and from 10 until 11 at the Church. Evans Memorial Funeral Home has been entrusted with her final arrangements.

Our prayers are with the family of MS Highway Patrolwoman Felicia Breland, the first African American female trooper (1980) whose died March 27th . She was honored by the MS House of Representatives with a Memorial Resolution in her honor, saying in part, “The state of MS lost a wonderful friend, true public servant, decorated law enforcement officer, historic trailblazer, and heroine.”
A beautiful memorial was held for Mrs. Shirley Burks Wilson at her home church, Little Rock M. B. Church, April 10th with Pastor Sheldon Thomas officiating and delivering her eulogy. Dr. Rhonda Kelley was the Mistress of Order and other participants included family and friends who shared beautiful memories as a Scott Central graduate, and employee at Sara Lee Bakery and with the USDA for 25 years. Please continue to remember her family, especially her daughter Kimberly (Jonathan) Wilson and grandchildren Chelsey and Ta’Marius. Congratulations to Crystal Ellis McFerrin, daughter of Dr. Cheryl Slaughter Ellis and Sydney Ellis, who became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority during Saturday’s ceremony in Murfreesboro, TN. Her cousin, and Delta Soror Dr. Constance Harvey Burwell (Legacy) was present to assist in the ‘pinning ceremony.’ Her cousin James, III (Tre’) enjoyed visiting with Aunt Cherry and her grandsons, Ellis and Everett Walker, and Uncle Sidney.
Congratulations to MS Highway Patrolman Lt. Colonel Malachi J. Sanders whose retirement (after 30 years of service) was celebrated by family and friends Saturday at the Hamasa Shriner Building in Marion, MS. More than 100 friends and family members joined in this celebration, including his mother who was recognized and honored by Sanders. Among those present to thank him for his service were MSHP Captains Puckett and Hutchins, Colonel Haynes, Major Willis, Lt. Colonel Ivory, Ret. Lt. Colonel Brown, and Retired Colonel Ginn. Attending and honoring Sanders were Rep. Young, Constance Slaughter Harvey, who filed the desegregation lawsuit in 1971, and Retired Lt. R. O. Williams, who was one of the original three African American Troopers to complete and graduate from the Academy. Congratulations and Kudos to Retired Lt. Colonel Sanders.
We enjoyed attending Harlem Globetrotters Review at the Raising Cane’s River Center in Baton Rouge. It was a traditional family event for James “Tre” Burwell, his mother Constance O. Burwell, and granny Constance Slaughter Harvey. Souvenirs and photos are reserved at the Slaughter Library/Legacy Reading Center.
Our readers are invited to participate in the MS State Health Department Colon Experience at the Forest Public Library from 11:30 to 1:00 this Thursday, April 25th. It promises to be a very informative and enjoyable experience. Colon Cancer can be detected with a colonoscopy which is done every ten years. The only way to prevent colon cancer is to find polyps early and have them removed. Additional details will be shared at this event. There will be a “walk through” demonstration to illustrate the need to detect and prevent colon cancer. Legacy, through partnership with MS State Department of Health and Forest Public Library, will provide luncheon refreshments.
We appreciate the invitation to attend the “Early Birthday Party Celebration” for Morton Alderwoman Onedia Laster on Saturday, April 6th. We enjoyed the beautiful house party inside as well as outside. The food was delicious, and the fellowship was wonderful. It was good to see all in attendance. On April 10th, she celebrated her “actual birthday” with more love from family and friends. She enjoyed and appreciated birthday phone calls on that day.
