Last week Norma Ruth Lee was at Blue Mountain Christian University for a workshop on Thursday and a Board of Trustees meeting on Friday. She enjoyed staying with her cousin Jamie Grace Provence in New Albany. On her return trip to Forest, she visited with her brother Mike and Patty Robbins and friends Gaybie and Bill Fortenberry in Oxford.
Forest is proud to have in our community Dr. Steven Reed of Southern Eye Care as president elect of American Optometric Association. He is the first Mississippian to be elected for this honor. Congratulations, Dr. Reed!
Since last week’s paper came out, we learned that Friend Walker did win in the Clarion Ledger “Mississippi Preps Athlete of the week” poll for the prior week. Family and friends are so proud of and happy for him! He and his brother John William were both also listed that same week in the “outstanding players of the week”section.
Proud parents of the young men are Tom and Crissie Walker. Friend and John William Walker are grandsons of Gene and Dianne Walker of Forest and Mike and Sheila Wooten of Lake.
Driving from Birmingham last Friday evening was Christy Walker Cofer and her family to cheer on her nephews playing against Pisgah. Paul and Christy, with children Grace and Thomas, were excited to see at least three completed passes between brothers, Friend and John William, during the game that ended in a win for St Andrews by 35-34. Congratulations, boys!!
Thanks to another completely unrelated contributor, who sent in some impressive stats from last week’s big St Andrew vs Pisgah game:
Friend Walker was 18 of 27, passing for 321 yards and four touchdowns in the 35-34 victory over Pisgah.
John William Walker had nine receptions, and 185 yards and three touchdowns.
This is the week of the Class of 1962 Reunion on this Saturday, Oct 21 at Doug Courtney’s Cabin. Midday Cookout! Last chance to contact Kelly (901-481-0526) or Janice (601-507-8845) if you have not already done so!
When Judge Tom and Norma Ruth Lee were attending the swimming meet at the Flowood Liberty Park to cheer for their granddaughter Claudia Maron competing for St. Andrews, they were glad to see other Forest grandparents there. Charles and Linda May were there to cheer for their grandson Christopher Patrick who was swimming for Brandon. Grandparent Nancy Patrick formerly of Forest was, also, there for Christopher Patrick.
Many tuned in last Thursday to enjoy Fairhope High School senior Spence Sims fielding questions on Varsity Basketball Media Day. With him was teammate, McRae Taul, who joined him in answering questions from a large group of sports media covering the south Alabama area. Spence is the great grandson of longtime columnist Maybeth Ormond. Surely wish we had received word of this event a bit earlier!
Hope you’ll also send in items of interest for the column to us at maybethmo@aol.com. We look forward to hearing from you, and gratefully appreciate your contributions.
