We are saddened by the death of Mrs. Allenteen Watkins who passed Friday, September 14th at the University Medical Center. Mrs. Watkins was a resident of Bedford in Newton and prior to that time, she was a vibrant face in our community. Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 22nd at 1:00 at Truelight in Walnut Grove. Our prayers are with her family, especially her daughter, Ledora Benton and granddaughter Roxanne Cross. Please keep them in your prayers.
We are sorry to learn of the death of Mr. Charles Bradford who transitioned Friday and will be memorialized Saturday, September 22nd at 11:00 at Lone Pilgrim M. B. Church. Our prayers are with his family especially his wife, Mrs. Inette Bradford. Please keep his family in your prayers
Our hearts are heavy as we pray for the families of Mr. Wayne Daniels of Bolton,and Attorney Carver Randle of Indianola. Both were memoralized Saturday, September 15th.
Wayne Daniels was a Jackson State University administrator, Bolton Police Chief, and a graduate of Tougaloo College. His long time friend Congressman Bennie Thompson shared memories during the memorial which was at Asbury U. M. Church In Bolton. Dr. Bobby Cooper was the organist. Please keep his family in your prayers.
Attorney Carver Randle, a graduate of MVSU and the University of MS School of Law was praised during memorial services at the MVSU auditorium which was recently Named in his honor. Attorney Randle was remembered as a very special supporter and effective advocate for MVSU. Our prayers are with his family, especially his wife, Rose, and children. Please keep his family in your prayers.
We join other national and international citizens in expressing our sadness following the death of former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annam, a polished Diplomat from Ghana, who is remembered for “his leadership over 10 years when the world faced a crisis of poverty, injustice and disease.” He was the first African to lead the United Nations and he earned the Nobel Peace Prize for his commitment to peacekeeping.

Congratulations to our new Election commissioner Carolyn Knowles who was sworn in Friday, September 15th by Chancery Court Chancellor David Clark. The oath was administered at noon at the courthouse. We’re proud of Commissioner Knowles and applaud her and her knowledge of election law. Kudos to Scott County Supervisors who appointed Mrs. Knowles!
Happy 96th birthday to Mrs. Naomi Dean Williams, a Wiggins, MS native and resident of Lackey Convalescent Home, who celebrated her birthday Saturday in the Center’s Dining Room. This annual celebration honors all friends who have September birthdays and they, like Mrs. Williams, are pampered with affection, attention and gifts. Others celebrating their special day were Susie Ickom, Connie Stewart, Sandra Carr, and Courney Funches. Out of town visitors were Curtis and Bessie Maxwell, brother of Lillian Gray, from Wiggins, Reggie and Tess Funches and daughters Caelyn and Courney from Yazoo City, and James and Constance Burwell and son James (Tre’) from Jackson. The event coordinator, Alderwoman Cynthia Melton, expresses appreciation to all in attendance especially the staff and residents of the Lackey Nursing and Convalescent Home. Thanks also to Dewan Walker who provided music, Dorothy Pinkston, Carolyn Knowles, Dorothy Strong, Constance Slaughter-Harvey, Kathern Qualls, and Lillian Gray. Thanks for special assistance from Ledarrin Collins, Stephanie Alford, Faye Anderson, and Erica Burkes. We always enjoy the fun, food, and fellowship at this event for Mrs. Williams who is the cousin of the late Mrs. Olivia Kelley Slaughter.
Kudos to Forest Rotarians who paid tribute to our military heroes during their Wednesday luncheon meeting. Under the leadership of Rotary president Renae Harrell and Program chair Mayor Nancy Chambers, four local National Guardsmen were designated to receive special “Forest Rotary Appreciation Boxes” stuffed with goodies and much love and appreciation. Thanks Rotarians for putting service above self!
Constance Slaughter-Harvey recently spoke to the University of MS Black Law Students Association members during their Annual Retreat at the Law Center.
