Please continue to remember our readers who are facing health challenges especially Mr. Albert Moore who was re-admitted to Lackey Hospital last week. When we visited, he was in good spirits and was receiving loving care and attention from his wife, Mrs. Lucy.
We enjoyed visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Howard (Sue) of Nashville who were home visiting Rita Park and other family members and friends. They enjoy reading The Times in their Nashville home. Holiday greetings to them.
Special Thanksgiving love was delivered to Mrs. Flo Chambers and Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Nichols when their children joined them at their Forest homes to give thanks for their blessings. Paula (GA) and Mona (Hattiesburg) broke bread with their mother, Flo Chambers. Mark and Melissa traveled from Hawaii and Maryland to break bread with their parents, Mitchell and Mary Nichols. They were also guests of the Excel family and enjoyed the delicious Thanksgiving meal. What a wonderful Thanksgiving gift!
We enjoyed the 86th Anniversary of New Bethel M. B. Church Sunday, November 18th with Rev. Sheldon Thomas serving as guest speaker. Pastor Vincent Hopkins provided the litany and Larry and Shelia Brown served as mistress and master of ceremony. Other program participants included Mesdames Susie Boyd, Oreadus Wash, Louise Harrison, Diane Kimble, Charlean Youngblood, Shakifria Kimble, Angelia Cross. Little Ora Ford welcomed all in attendance. Rev. Sheldon Thomas was introduced by his wife, Mrs. Regina Thomas. Choirs from New Bethel Choir and Little Rock M. B. Church provided beautiful music. Honorees were John Norris, Abraham Buckley and Mesdames Margaret Bates, Rita Wash. Lula Kelley and Shirley Norris. They were honored for their many years of service to the Church. Following the program, we enjoyed a delicious home cooked meal.
Forest native and Forest High School graduate Dr. Chris Gilmer became the 17th President of West Virginia University at Parkersburg (WVUP) Friday, November 9th in Parkersburg. He is the son of Charles Gilmer and the late Peggy Adams Gilmer. During his inaugural address, Dr. Gilmer praised his parents for their support and acknowledge the support and presence of his father who was in attendance. He also expressed appreciation to his spouse, David Creel. Other family and friends from Mississippi in attendance were his sister Holly Collums and nieces Emma and Hannah Collums. Constance Slaughter-Harvey and grandson, James “Tre” Burwell, III were also in attendance. It was a moving and special program and Dr, Gilmer has hit the ground running. Representative from the UWUP Foundation, University Board, Administration, Faculty and Student Body praised Dr. Gilmer’s record and performance. We also join in and express our congratulations and thank him for remembering his home town supporters and friends.
The National Institutes for Historically Underserved Students’ Think Tank 2018 was held at the Blennerhassett Hotel in Parkersburg, WVA November 10, 2018. The event was hosted by West Virginia University and Alcorn State University. Dr. Chris Gilmer and Alcorn’s Interim President Dr. Donzell Lee welcomed participants including Mississippians, Vicksburg School Superintendent Chad Shealy, Dr. Dorothy McGill, Dr. Ivan Banks, and Attorneys Shirlethia Franklin and Constance Slaughter-Harvey. During the Town Hall Meeting, the Logo Contest Award was presented to Harmony Vaughan from Vicksburg. The Generations Awards were presented to Constance Harvey, Constance Olivia Burwell, and James “Tre” Burwell, and to Dr. Lionel Bordeaux and family. The art installation, “A Peace of Mind”, was presented by documentary photographer, John Noltner. It was a wonderful experience and additional details on this art installation may be obtained at the Legacy office.
Congratulations to Scott Central High School Football team on its recent victory over Calhoun City Friday night with a score of 27 to 0. We’re proud of these young men and wish them well in the playoff! Way to go!!!
