We enjoyed celebrating Black History Month with members and guests of Green Grove U.M. Church Sunday, February 24th. Pastor Dino Terrell provided scripture and prayer. Ms. Rhonda Carter was the mistress of ceremonies and Mrs. Brenda Terrell provided the welcome. Beautiful poems were shared by Amorie McClendon, Mikayla Bibbs, and twins Makhala and Makhali Berry. The guest and featured speaker was Richland Municipal Judge Katrina Gibbs, who was introduced by her cousin Mikayla Bibbs. Judge Gibbs addressed the theme “Black Women: A Legacy of Excellence” and shared contributions of African American women especially in the area of science and inventions. She referenced Biblical leaders, Ruth and Naomi and shared her journey through high school, college and law school at MS College. We appreciate the invitation from Mr. and Mrs. John (Rose) Anderson. Following the program, we enjoyed a delicious meal.
Alderwoman Cynthia Slaughter Melton was the guest speaker for the Lynch Chapel U.M. Church Black History Celebration Sunday, February 24th. Following the welcome by Maleihya Jones, Alderwoman Melton was introduced by Myah Patrick. Her message referenced the African Proverb “It Takes A Village to Raise A Child.” She encouraged this generation to accept the baton being handed to them and she encouraged youth to prepare for today’s challenges. She also shared historical contributions of local African Americans. We enjoyed the message, praise dance by the Church’s youth, and the fellowship. Pastor Shirley Wilder expressed appreciation to all in attendance.
Congratulations to the youth leadership of Concord M.B. Church for a wonderful Black History Celebration. Coach Datodrick Pinkston was the master of ceremony, and other youth leaders assisting in this coordination were Chris Macon, Jomiski Nelson, Antonia Pinkston, Carolyn Macon, and Delora Nelson. The program was filled with interesting tidbits regarding Black History Month and contributors to the making of this history. Special guests were members of the neighboring Lynch Chapel U. M. Church Praise Team. Pastor Henry Patrick thanked the leaders, program participants and others in attendance.
We salute the Bettye Mae Jack Middle School (BMJMS) administration for recognizing and honoring former Scott County teachers Wednesday, February 20th. Serving as greeters/hostesses were members of the BMJMS student council, namely, Jon Tyler Wells, Alex Bierman, Brayden Tucker, Meghan Torrano, and Parris Gammage. Robert Christian prepared his usual delicious cuisine which was served by Mesdames Debra Lowery, Misty Wells and Cindy Craig. Legacy board member Mrs. Stephanie York Rhodes was one of the honorees and other honorees included Mesdames Annie Churchy, Jeanine Robertson, Joanne Keeton, Brenda Scank, Janelle Laster, Jean Lovett, Sonda Johnson, Mary Sessums, Sig Miles, Bobbie Gail Rogers, Shy Ann Lloyd, Rebecca Farris, Cindy Vardaman, Julie Latham, Dena Gray and Martha Smith. Special thanks to the BMJ principals Porter and Nobles.

Toni Deniece Seawright, a native of Pascagoula, made history in 1987 when she became the first African American to become Miss Mississippi and the fourth runner-up in the 1988 Miss America pageant. She was the first African American to earn a degree in music at MS University for Women (W). She won the Miss W preliminary to the Miss American pageant. Ms. Seawright is an actress, singer and songwriter.
