Our community responded, in a very positive manner, to the recent immigration sweep of more than 300 local workers on the second day of school. Many local churches, organizations and citizens responded to this crisis which resulted in children being separated from their parents. Special thanks to the United Methodist Church and the Trinity Mission which opened doors and assisted with the provision of food to children and families. A very special thanks to Rev. Sheila Cumbest, Chairwoman of the Trinity Mission Board of Directors and other board members. Thanks to other organizations such as St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Catholic Charities, Excel, Scott County Baptist Association, Morton’s We Care, and other local churches for opening their hearts to families in need. Kudos to the Forest and Scott County Schools, the Scott County Children’s Protective Services staff, Legacy, and the Scott County Bar Association for their immediate response to ensure the safety of our children. Additional kudos will be extended in next week’s column.
