A beautiful memorial service for Ms. Ellawee Odom Ivy was held Saturday, November 16th at Agape Faith Full Gospel Church. Elder Arthur Kennedy officiated and delivered her eulogy. Our prayers are with her family including her children, Dominique, Delisa, Tabitha and Damien, and sister Dorothy Odom Pinkston. Evans Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
We join other Mississippians in remembering former House Speaker William “Billy” McCoy. He transitioned November 12th and was memorialized Friday, November 15th at his home church in Booneville. His legacy reflects dedicated service as State Representative for Alcorn and Prentiss Counties for more than 31 years and as House Speaker for two terms. Our prayers are with his family especially his wife, Edith, and children.
Our prayers continue to be with our readers who are facing health challenges, namely, Phyllis Harper Thomas, Raymond Mabry, Betty Jones, Mr. Albert Moore, who has returned to Lackey Hospital, Mrs. Maudis Minor, Ronnie Thomas, Berdie Harvey, Angel Martinez, John Lee Evans, and Marquita Patrick.
The Multi-County Community Service Agency Inaugural Awards Gala was held Friday, November 15th at the Dulaney Center of Meridian Community College. The program theme was “Building Bridges” and Executive Director Ronald Collier was the program guide. Award recipients were Meridian Councilwoman Fannie Johnson, Clark County Judge Tobey Bartee, Boys & Girls Club Director Ricky Hood, The Radio People owner and operator Clay Holladay, Legacy Founder Attorney Constance Slaughter-Harvey, F. W. Williams State Agency partner Lamar McDonald, 1st Class Petty Officer Darius Latta, and Actress Sela Ward. We enjoyed the event and program participants including Meridian Councilwoman Kim Houston, Baylor Family Gospel Singers, Teresa Grice, Jesse Ruffin, Octavia Washington, and Rev. Sammie Hoskins. Clients Ruffin and Washington gave moving testimonies regarding the services received from Multi-County.
Locals attending were Multi-County Board Member Rev. Akins, Multi-County Scott County Coordinator Rosa Orella and husband Felipe, Claudine Wash and son Terrence, and Slaughter-Harvey. Multi-County provides assistance and services to needy persons including the weatherization program and utilities assistance program.

Commendations to Pastor Shirley Wilder and the Lynch Chapel U. M. Church Family for addressing one of the most serious evils lurking in our communities. Human trafficking is the subject of the Lynch Chapel message to be given the 4th Sunday (November 24th) during the 10:00 hour. Out-of-town Human Trafficking consultants and speakers will deliver their messages and our readers are invited to attend and receive the messages.
The Homemakers Cluster Club met Tuesday, November 12th at the Extension Office. Vice President Carolyn Macon presided. Desaree Bradford provided refreshments. The Club will sponsor a sidewalk sale Saturday, December 7th starting at 7:00 a.m.
The Cluster Club participated in the Creative Christmas held at the Forest National Guard Armory Friday, November 15th. Club members attending and participating in food and other sales were Cynthia Melton, Connie Wash, Dorothy Strong and Tressie Ware. There were other groups/organizations participating and providing goods and items for sale. The Christmas decorations and wreaths were beautiful and the food was delicious. We enjoyed browsing and looking at all the pretty items. The day was very enjoyable and festive.
Members of the SCTS/ETHHS/ FHS Alumni Association Planning Committee met November 10th and conducted business. Members present were Susie Boyd, Cynthia Melton, Patty Odom, Mattye Evans, Linda and Vincent Solomon, Ernest Love and Booker Mitchell. Linda Solomon won the door prize donated by Mattye Evans. The next meeting will be held next year on January 19, 2020.
Legacy Mentors and Mentees enjoyed sharing experiences concerning their Camp ZiWE camping trip at Roosevelt State Park. Plans are underway to return to Roosevelt and continue their Wildlife Adventure. Special appreciation to the MS Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks for assistance under the 2019-2020 Youth Participation Initiative Program.
Scott County was well represented at the East Jackson Charge Conference held November 12th. Rev. Dr. Connie Shelton, East Jackson District Superintendent called the Conference to order and welcomed all United Methodists in attendance. Lynch Chapel U. M. Pastor, Rev. Shirley Wilder participated in a skit. Scott County Churches participating were Carr, Christian Banner, EJ Hispanic, Forest, Gasque Chapel, Green Grove, High Hill, Homewood, Independence, Kalem, Lynch Chapel, Morton FUMC, Sebastopol, Sherman Hill, Sylvester and Union Grove.
Congratulations to the newest members of Mt Moriah M. B. Church. These young Christians were baptized Sunday and welcomed by Church members. Rev. Ralph James is the pastor.
We enjoyed visiting with Pastor Joe Dyer, former pastor at St. Michael Catholic Church. He officiated at Christ the King’s Mass Sunday. Rev. Dyer sends his best regards.
The next JSU Scott County Alumni Chapter meeting will be held Monday, December 2nd at 5:30. Preparations for Christmas Parade (December 6th) and Gala will be discussed.
