We are sorry to learn of the death of Mrs. Bettie Nicks, widow of the late Frank Nicks, who transitioned Friday, October 11th at her home. Mrs. Nicks was a very special and loving lady who will be missed. Her memorial and funeral arrangements are set for Saturday, October 19th at 11:00 a.m. at Little Rock M. B. Church. Holifield Funeral Home is in charge. Our prayers are with her family, especially her children.

Memorial services will be held for Mrs. Naomi Dean Williams Saturday, October 26th at H. A. Brown United Methodist Church in Wiggins at 11:00 a. m. For the past several years, Mrs. Williams was a resident of Scott County at Lackey Convalescent Home and MS Care Center. She was the first cousin of the late Mrs. Olivia Kelley Slaughter and was one of the first African American Registered Nurses in Mississippi. Our prayers are with her family.

Members of the Legacy Health Is Wealth/Scott County African American Historical Society celebrated the Enrichment Series during their monthly working luncheon at the Slaughter Library. Reflections were shared regarding the late Mrs. Olivia Slaughter’s legacy and her many contributions to community youth especially as a mentor and a humanitarian. In addition to enjoying a delicious low calorie birthday cake, they enjoyed a healthy lunch. They also enjoyed learning about gourds from gardener Mrs. Rita Parker. Attendees included D. L. Bennett, Cynthia Melton, Mae Lizzie Jones, Shirley Sykes, Henry Slaughter, Charles Watkins, Constance and James Burwell, Dorothy Pinkston, Carolyn Knowles, Rita Parker, Barbara Dawson, Shonnette Kelley, Bobbie Ringo, Bobbie Hollins, Dot Hollis, Constance Slaughter-Harvey, and Rhonda Kelley.
Stakeholders in Legacy’s Save Our Youth through Community Action (SOYTCA) met Tuesday, October 1st at the Slaughter Library and finalized plans for their community and school forums. The next series of forums will begin October 29th at Morton High School at 10:30 and conclude at Bettye Mae Jack Middle School at 1:30. The focus will be anti-bullying strategy.
The Cluster Club met October 8th at the MS Extension Center and Vice President Carolyn Macon presided. Members discussed various projects for the holiday year end. The November meeting is “Birthday Club” meeting where members will celebrate all birthdays. Members requested our readers keep Connie Stewart in prayer and to remember Dorothy Strong in the loss of her mother, Mrs. Lula Wilson.
The Scott County JSU Alumni Club met Thursday, October 3rd at the Forest Services Center where President Albert Gray presided. Members discussed ongoing club sponsored projects. The JSU Little Miss/Master Pageant will be held November 17th at 2:00 p.m. at the Forest Services Center. Contact any club members for information. The SCTS/ETHHS Planning Committee met Sunday, September 29th at the Odessa Graves building. President Susie Boyd presided. Members discussed the 2020 Reunion to be held July 10 – July 12th. The theme is “The Roaring 20’s.” President Boyd provided a door prize which was won by Mattye Evans. Additional members present were Carolyn Knowles, Marquita Patrick, Abraham Buckley, Dorothy Pinkston, Carolyn Macon, Ernest Love, Booker Mitchell, Vincent and Linda Solomon, Mattie Rasco, Esther Johnson, Nettie Ware, Cynthia Melton, Patty Odom, and Susie McDonald. The next meeting is Sunday, October 27th at 5:00 p.m.
