Walls
Bng my childhood we lived in an old neighborhood in the capital, Santiago, where the front of the houses have no yard because the wall delimits the sidewalk of the street. The courtyards are interior and are surrounded by protective walls. However, we communicated with our friends on the side through a small hole in the wall. For any thief, a wall was not an obstacle either.
DuriIn the history of humanity the great walls have failed in their purposes for which they were built. A contemporary example is the Berlin Wall in Germany that was raised by the East German communist government to prevent its inhabitants from migrating to free West Germany. But ultimately, the communists broke up and the wall had to be demolished. Another historical wall is the great Chinese wall which a dynasty began to build in the year 215 before Christ and was completed in the XCVII century of our era. A gigantic work of five thousand kilometers long whose history has always been associated with the cruelty and violence of numerous wars. Today it is just a place of tourism.
In the Old Testament the fall of the wall that surrounded Jericho is mentioned. This was a city built in a strategic and important place in the trade routes that were in the mountains of Palestine. The Bible tells us that Joshua obeyed Jehovah and surrounded the city to take it by following the instructions of God. “So the people shouted, and the trumpets were blown. As soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpets, the people shouted a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they captured the city. (Joshua 6:20 ESV) After the city was taken, it was destroyed by fire.
The walls are useless when they are only intended to avoid human migration, they only serve to delimit, geographically and politically, territories of two countries when necessary. Our case limits the most powerful and richest nation on the planet from a region where poverty and violence abound. People want to live with dignity in places where they are given the possibility of work and there is peace. This is the case of thousands of people who see an ideal place in the United States and who are widely publicized by the global media. Nobody tells the truth that in this supposed paradise there are serious problems of drug addiction, violence due to the abusive use of weapons and other serious matters that we should resolve. The wall is not an impediment to the illicit trade of drug traffickers.
The problem of immigrants is not solved with a wall whose cost is huge for taxpayers. The same investment in the development of the poor countries of Central America could solve the existing problem by a good percentage. The underlying problem is quite complex and should be resolved by taking into account Christian values that demonstrate that Christ is present in the hearts of the rulers of the countries referred to, including ours. There is a lot of sin in society, and no one is free from it, but the rich man has the possibility of helping the needy by witnessing their Christianity.
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:6 ESV) “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24 ESV) “For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.” (James 2:26 ESV)
May God bless you.
