Let us know your history
Midway M. B. Church will be celebrating Black History this month. For the entire month we will wear our African American attire or any attire our ancestors wore. On the 4th Sunday which is February 23rd during regular service we will celebrate Black History with a program. Patty Odom is in charge of the program.
A traditional soul food menu will be served. All items on the menu will be homemade. Nothing commercial prepared will be served. Honoring those who finished with terminal degrees from Midway are: Dr. Locord Wilson Ph.D., Dr. Aurby Della Odom White DM, Psy.D. (Psychiatrist), Dr. Lorraine Dozier D.V.M and Dr. Lanee Riley DM, Internal Medicine, neighboring community Little Rock, Dr. Gloria Butler DM.
Dr. Locord Wilson received her high school degree from Scott Central Attendance Center, BS from Jackson State University, Masters from Atlanta University and her Ph.D. from Walden University. She is currently serving as associate Dean of the College of Education at, Jackson State University, Jackson, MS. She is the daughter of the late Maggie Martin Douglas Cornelius and Lieutenant McKinley Douglas, the granddaughter of Lottie Stowers, Estalla Wilson and Jessie Weathers Douglas, the great granddaughter of Delia Odom McClendon and Mal McClendon.
Dr. Lorraine Dozier received her high school degree from Scott Central Attendance Center, attended Jackson State University going early to Tuskegee University to obtain her D.V.M. degree. She later attended Jackson State University obtaining her Masters in Public Health. She is currently employed with USDA as a supervising inspector covering multiple plants in the state.
Dr. Lanee Riley received her high school degree from Scott Central Attendance Center, BS from Jackson State University, and Masters from Mississippi College in Clinton. She entered in to the medical program graduating with her MD degree and advancing her education with a degree in Internal Medicine from the University of Mississippi, Jackson, Mississippi. Dr. Lanee Riley is the daughter of Rex Riley and Dr. Lorraine Dozier Riley.
Dr. Aurby Odom White graduated from North Scott High School. She was one of the first five African Americans to attend, at that time, the all white Scott Central Attendance Center. She received her BS from Tougaloo College and her MD from the Medical University in Philadelphia, PA. She advanced her education by obtaining her degree and certification in Psychology, becoming a licensed psychiatrist. For many years she worked as a psychiatrist in Philadelphia. She recently relocated to California to be close to her daughter, the singer, Santa Gold. Aurby is the daughter of the late Isodore and Gladys Harper Odom, the granddaughter of the late Jennie Johnson and Alex Odom. Alex Odom and Delia Odom McClendon were sisters and brothers.
The five students who first integrated Scott Central Attendance Center were Dr. Aurby Odom White, Maxine Odom Gilmore, Dorothy Strong Groves, Francis Odom Denson and Elder Auther Kennedy. Auther Kennedy stayed for a few days but the rest stayed the year and were failed, and not able to graduate from the school they had attended all year. Mr. W. L. Slaughter arranged for them to attend summer school in Meridian, where they finished their senior year and entered college in the fall. It is amazing how these young people who were “A” students failed their course work. They strived to succeed, all graduating from college, even some graduating with Doctorate degrees.
