Congratulations to: The Scott County Livestock Judging Team: Bailey Smith, Hannah Beatty, Kayden Smith and Addison Vowell, on placing second at Southwest District.
To: Michael Wilson, representing MHS in the Forest-Scott Career and Technology Center National Technical Honor Society (NTHS), serving as president 2017-18.
To: Those newly inducted members to NTHS, representing MHS: Madison Huff, Sophie Wilkerson and Timothy Johnson. They are completing workforce education programs at the Center and all have outstanding levels of achievement and academic excellence in career technical classes. They are an excellent personnel resource for local businesses and industries.
To: Former Forest resident, Stacy Lee Boyett and her husband Brett on their writing/co-writing contribution of songs in the current movie playing in local theaters. “Forever My Girl” is a musical and Stacy will have a brief role. She is the grandaughter of John Ed and Bobbie Jean Lee, the daughter of Jacky Lee and Angela Crimm. Her father Jacky and her aunt Janice were the Ring Bearer and Flower Girl in the wedding of this columnist and spouse. We had the pleasure of enjoying her vocal and acting talents during the time that she and our son Brian attended MUW.
To: Former Morton resident, John Underwood, chief archaeologist for the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, for interesting information he provided to the Magnolia section of The Clarion Ledger. The article highlighted the prehistoric Native American Mounds in Mississippi and the location of various family cemeteries for homesteaders located atop the mounds near their locations. These flat topped mounds were desirable for this purpose due to safety from flooding and the views of surrounding landscapes.
Prayers and concern for: Patricia Parker Beugron (request of Lacey Harvey), Charles Sullivan, Jennie Ruth Patrick, Helen Jean Crotwell and Kelly Langford.
Sympathy to the families of: Bobbie McMillan Ogletree, A. M. “Buddy” Lovett, Denson Henry of Texas (graduate of MHS), Monroe Hugh Myers, Brandi Shoemaker Thomason, Jeremy Paul, Stella Morgan and Carolyn Anderson.
Travelin’, visitin’ and such: Seventy plus MHV members, county agents and guests attended the annual Sub-district (5-County) meeting held at Morton Activities Center-Farris Park. Representing the county councils of Leake, Rankin, Scott and Simpson counties they enjoyed celebrating the 100th Birthday of MHV complete with decorations and cake commemorating the amazing occasion. Morton Mayor, Gerald Keeton welcomed the visitors to Morton and the MHV State Council president, Linda Smith gave the Update information for the 2017-18 year. Gratitude is expressed to Andy chambers, Director of Nursing-Scott Regional Hospital, on presenting a most informative power point program on Heart Health, interspersed with his own tidbits of humor included. Also to Rev. Trey Harper, pastor of Forest United Methodist Church on his entertaining “Story Telling” talent as he took attendees on a trip down memory lane which included so many of the skills and improvisations required to provide a home for families then and now. He, too, inserted a vocal offering and humor into his presentation. Delicious treats at break time and the lunch meal plus door prizes were additional provisions for a very successful event.
