We Care Missions Food Distribution dates for June are Friday, June 8 and Friday June 22 from 10 a.m.-12 noon at Morton United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 29 Church Street. All participants must provide required documents for all members of their household in order to be eligible to receive the food.
Quick Bites offered by the MSU Extension Service will present the following programs in June at the Scott County Extension Service facility. June 7th “June is Rose Month” presented by Lynette McDougal, Instructor Plant and Soil Sciences at MSU; June 14th “Say Cheese! MAFES Cheese Store” will be presented by Troy Weaver, MAFES Store Manager at MSU; June 28 “Got Pests in Your Garden” presented by Dr. Blake Layton, MSU Extension Professor Biochemistry Molecular Biology. Entomology and Plant Pathology. All classes are held through interactive video on Thursdays from 12 noon-1 p.m. There is no fee, but registration is required prior to the date one wishes to attend.
Congratulations to: Sgt. Ben McCurdy, conservation officer with the MS Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, who was honored as a “Top Cop” during “Police Memorial and Appreciation Day.” The event honored 27 officers on the local level and 14 on the state level including McCurdy, and five on the federal level. He assisted in the rescue of a teenager trapped in rising water and two subjects whose vessel sank after taking in water. All subjects were rescued without injury.

To: Luke Reynolds of Forest, a member of the USM Golden Eagles baseball team, on being tabbed for a first team selection to All-American Team Collegiate Baseball and third team All-American Baseball America. He also earned C-USA Player and Newcomer of the Year honors on the strength of a .400 batting average with 20 doubles, a triple, 15 home runs and 60 RBIs. He added 69 runs and has tied a single-season school record with 63 walks.
To: Cathy Johnson and Frisky Roland, members of Morton MHV club, on winning Blue ribbon Awards at the MHV State Council Cultural Arts Judged Exhibit during the Annual State Council Meeting on the MSU campus. Cathy’s Door Hanging Wreath and Frisky’s Fused Glass Pendant Necklace were judged to be First Place winners in their categories.
To: Carl Robert and Brunell Boozer Howorth on the celebration of their 70th Wedding Anniversary. The reception celebration was held in the beautiful home of their daughter Pam Howorth and spouse Bill Schmegel. This columnist was privileged to attend the wedding, the first formal wedding ceremony, with all of the “Pomp and Ceremony” fashionable at the time, for this wide eyed child to experience.
Prayers and concern for: Lois Wolverton, David French, Kaye Payne (Mrs. Rex) Keeton, LeShea Gray, Alex Summrall, Billy Steadman and continued concern for Bradley Wolverton, Sammye Jean Webb, Shelba Breedlove, Amanda McDonald Engle and those impacted by the many overwhelming natural disasters.

Travelin’, visitin’ and such: Betsy Comfort, Frisky Roland, Shirley Sawyer and Kathy Warren, representing the Scott County MHV Council and Morton MHV Club, attended the Annual MHV State Council 2018 meeting held on the campus of Mississippi State University. This year marked the 100th Anniversary of MHV under the MSU Extension Service. The original clubs were Tomato Clubs and Home Demonstration Clubs. While there for the event they were welcomed by Dr. Gary Jackson, MSU Extension Director. The Monday-Thursday meeting provided workshops, tours, Meet and Greet gatherings, a 100th Birthday celebration, a silent auction, BINGO, a memorial service for those members lost in 2017-18 (Scott County-Donna Tucker and Jennie Ruth Patrick), dinner banquet showcasing historical posters and presentations from the 10 decades of the organization and a fashion show featuring both constructed garments and purchased garments (Frisky represented the Scott County and Capital Area MHV). Shirley serves as the MHV State Council secretary and Kathy serves the Capital Area as a Junior Director.
Melvin, Frisky and Brian Roland attended the 70th Wedding Anniversary reception celebration for Carl Robert and Brunell Boozer Howorth. Brunell is a native of the Boozer Hill residence in the Pulaski community and is a graduate of MHS. Her siblings, Sadie Boozer Whitehead, Beth Boozer Churchwell and Dr. Drayton Boozer and his wife Beverly Beatty Boozer are all graduates of MHS also.
