Announcements: The remaining We Care Missions Food Distribution date for the month of January is Friday, January 25 from 10 a.m.-12 noon at Fellowship Hall of Morton United Methodist Church, 29 Church Street.
Opportunities at Excel Learning Center are: Martin Luther King Day, sponsored by the City of Morton and Excel will be held at the Center beginning at 5:30 p.m. with a meal included in the celebration. The public is invited to this free event, Pastor Marvin McLaurin, Mt. Zion, Lake will provide the message. A Readers Theater, featuring local teens, will add to the richness of the evening.
Also, Conversational Spanish Classes-Basic Level I, with Luis Cartagena instructing, will be held on Thursdays, January 24-April 11 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Cost for the course is $95. and CEU’s are available for students taking the class. More Quick Bites info through the MSU/Scott County Extension Office to be offered via Interactive video are scheduled for January 24 “Four States in Ninety Days: The AT”, presented by Dr. John Giesmann, Professor, Retired Extension Center for Technology Outreach. Info about the Applachian Trail ( scenery, wildlife, hospitality, etc.)...And on January 31 “Erasing Your Digital Footprints: Technology After You Die” presented by Andy Collins, instructor, Extension Center for Technology Outreach. These programs are offered at the Extension Service office, 230 South Davis Street, Forest free on Thursdays from 12 noon -1 p.m. Those interested should register their attendance by calling 601-469-4241.
Congratulations to: To the Central Mississippi Regional Library System, with which the libraries in Scott County operate, on receiving a Mississippi Library Star from the Mississippi Library Commission (MCL) as one of the highest-scoring libraries in the state. Level IV (CMRLS) libraries will receive a certificate and a Mississippi Star Library star to feature on their website.
To: Those local Cheer Squads on earning awards in recent competitions: Lake High School-3rd out of 13 teams in the 1A-3A small varsity non-tumbling division at the MHSAA Cheer Competition...Pelahatchie High School-2nd place at the MHSSA State Competition.
To: Teaira McCowan, senior MSU Bulldog on the women’s Basketball Team on being named to the John Wooden Award Midseason Watch List. Also, according to the Associated Press that included a poll McCowan was named the #1 Prospect for the 2019 WNBA Draft. If she should go 1st, this would make MSU one of only four schools to have multiple first round drafts. Latoya Thomas was in 2003.

Travelin’, visitin’ and such: Florence Measells, her granddaughter Amanda, her husband Luke Smith, their children Leland and Landry and Luke’s mother Debbie went with a church group from First Baptist of Florence to Kentucky. The tour included the Creation Museum and Noah’s Ark. The group found the Ark to be an outstanding feat and one that should be visited. Florence and family took a few extra days to explore attractions in Ohio and Indiana. Other tours in Kentucky included the Corvette Museum and Louisville for the tour of the factory manufacturing the famous MLB bats and a leisurely drive back home along the Natchez Trace with stops at places of interest.
