We are sorry to learn of the death of Mrs. Mae Ruth Robinson who transitioned Thursday, January 9th, just 16 days short of her 95th birthday. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, January 15th at 11:00 at Little Rock Church. Our prayers are with her children, Ollie, W. C. (Barbara), Otto, Jimmy (Sandra), Mary Ann Brown, and Mosie Wash.
We are sorry to learn of the death of Mr. Oliver Moore of the Galilee Community. Mr. Moore transitioned at the age of 101 Thursday, January 8th and would have celebrated his 102nd birthday on the 24th of this month. He transitioned 31 days after his older brother, Mr. Hillman Moore. Memorial services are set for this Saturday at 11:00 at his home church of Galilee M. B. Church. Our prayers are with his family especially his children, James Luther, Dorothy Lynn, Carolyn, Bessie, Carrie Lee, Aretha, Lillian and Gene Oliver; and his brother Rev. Sammie Lee Rankin. We are sorry to learn of the transition of Former SWAC Hall of Famer Roscoe Nance. He was the first African American sportswriter to work for the Clarion Ledger. He was later known across the country as the dean of black college sportswriters. At the age of 71, he died of natural causes at his Virginia home. Please keep his family especially his daughter Rahkia Nance in your prayers.

The 23rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Walk will begin Monday, January 20th at the Slaughter Library and the Legacy Administrative Office on Jones Street. Registration begins at 7:30 and the walkers will start to line up at 7:50. The Walk will start at 8:00 with Mrs. Dorothy Strong, Legacy Mentor and Slaughter Library Tutor, serving as Walk Marshal.
Walkers will leave the Library on Jones Street and turn onto 4th Avenue to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive where they will stop for prayer; it will continue to Hillsboro Street and after crossing Highway 80, walkers will pause for prayer at the Courthouse and proceed to the Forest Services Center where they will pray and then continue their Walk down 1st Street and crossing Highway 80 at 7th Avenue and then returning to the Slaughter Library. Here, they will celebrate Dr. King’s life and legacy as well as recognize members of the community who shared in Dr. King’s Dream.
Legacy Mentees from Hawkins and Scott Central Middle Schools will share their views on Dr. King’s life and legacy. Refreshments will be served, and gifts will be shared with category winners.
Congratulations to Attorney Whitney Adams of Pelahatchie on her appointment as Morton City Judge. She was appointed by Mayor Keeton and approved by the Board of Alderpersons. Judge Adams is a graduate of Pelahatchie High and MS College School of Law. She also serves at Rankin County Justice Court Judge and Brandon City Judge. She is the first female city judge attorney in Scott County’s history.

The Excel Center will continue to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s Day at the Excel Center in Morton, Monday, January 20th at 6:00. High School students will share, through their play, the significance of Dr. King’s life. Constance Slaughter-Harvey will deliver personal reflections on the life and legacy of Dr. King. Clint Collier, United Methodist Minister, of Morton traveled with Dr. Martin Luther King during his 1966 visit to Neshoba County and Philadelphia to bring attention to the murders of Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner. Rev. Collier was jailed on fabricated charges and fined $100. Dr. King spearheaded the effort to raise the $100. As a result, Rev. Collier was able to continue to travel with Dr. King during his Mississippi visit. Rev. Collier’s widow is Mrs. Loyce Walker Collier of Morton who has total recall of this event.
