Our community paused to celebrate the life of one of the original supporters of Legacy and Slaughter Library, Mrs. Henrietta “Ma Henrietta” Horton. She transitioned Monday, July 13th at the age of 105 years. Graveside Memorial Services were held Saturday, July 18th at the St. Peter M. B. Church Cemetery.
She was honored by her family and friends during the service where Pastor Sheldon Thomas officiated. He referenced his association with Mrs. Horton when she worked at the Forest Services Center with the Council on Aging Senior Nutrition Program and volunteered with Head Start for many years. He also applauded her life of service to others.
Her great-granddaughter, Lauren Horton, granddaughter of the late Mrs. Winson Hudson and Credell and Peggy Calhoun, read a resolution on behalf of the children. Long-time family friend, Constance Slaughter-Harvey, presented a special tribute to each of her children. W. F. Mapp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Please keep her family in your prayers.
We join other citizens around the nation and world and celebrate the lives and legacies of two iconic stalwarts of the Civil Rights Movement — Representative John Lewis and Rev. C. T. Vivian, both of whom risked their lives and blood for the beloved community of America. Their contributions and accomplishments will be featured in next week’s column.
We are sorry to learn of the transition of Mr. Michael Parker, brother of the late Mr. Percy Parker. He was living in Detroit at the time of his death. Memorial services are scheduled for July 27th in Detroit. Please keep his family in your prayers.

Pastor Roberto Mena shared a beautiful homily Sunday with parishioners at St. Michael Catholic Church. His theme was “Trust God’s Justice.” During the homily, he suggested that we should all become signs of unity in this world, and referenced as examples Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the late Representative John Lewis. During service, tributes and expressions of appreciation were given to Sisters Obdulia Olivar and Maria Eugenia who are leaving the St. Michael Church community after having served parishioners for the last 10 years. Please keep them in your prayers.
We enjoyed Sunday service at Lynch Chapel U. M. Church where Pastor Shirley Wilder addressed the theme, “Take Time to Know Him.” During her message, she offered the following: Let’s not pray with one thing on our lips when something just the opposite is in our heart; When we pray, we must pray with an open and honest heart; Wipe out the bitterness and jealousy in your heart; and, In the end, know that God is big enough to take care of all of us. She closed her message with the song, “I Love the Lord.”
Rev. Sheldon Thomas, Pastor of Little Rock M. B. Church, continued to spread the good news with his Sunday sermon, entitled “Go Get Mordecal.” Following devotion and beautiful songs, Pastor Thomas referenced the Book of Esther as he addressed his theme. During the sermon, he shared the following: We must be willing to take risks for everyone else because we were born to be a blessing to others; We must be willing to be talked about and scorned; The enemy slept with attitude while the King slept with gratitude; While the enemy will build a defense against you, Heaven is building an offense for you; and You may see my condition but have you seen my position. In closing, he reminded us “to watch what we say and keep words sweet because we never know which ones we might have to eat.”
