We enjoyed the Bound to Excel Christmas Luncheon at Roosevelt State Park where mentees were honored and recognized. Mentees were recognized by the Scott County Morton and Scott Central administration with a special program. Dr. Regina Biggers, District Curriculum Coordinator, was the guest speaker and she encouraged mentees to take advantage of available educational opportunities. She also expressed, on behalf of the administration, appreciation to mentors Andre Hollis, Jody Matheny, Elmer Lowery and Roy Lowery. Expressions of appreciation from the young mentees brought tears to many eyes as they thanked their mentors for being interested in and supportive of them. Several mentees also thanked teachers who encouraged them including Mrs. Letonia Johnson and Mrs. LaWanda Matheny.
We join in congratulating these mentors who are stakeholders in Legacy’s Save Our Youth through Community Action and we commend Principal Miles Porter who has a long history of supporting youth and encouraging them to “stay the course.” Principal Porter praised the mentors and mentees. It was a wonderful expression of appreciation. Kudos were directed to Scott Central Football Team and Coach Devin Cooper for bringing home the Class 2-A State Championship. Several football players joined in thanking their mentors. Mayor Gerald Keeton encouraged the mentees to “never give up” and to keep God as their guide. We salute and commend this team of adults who have come together to work collectively to “save our youth.” We also send congratulatory wishes and hugs to these young mentees and count them as blessings during this season.
We enjoyed the delicious meal prepared by members of the St. Michael Catholic Church’s youth group — Accept Christ Everyday (ACE) where Diem Mi Pham is the spokesperson. We’re proud of their work which included making this a better world for all. What a special priority especially during this Advent season.
During this Advent season, let us remember the real meaning of Advent which is to prepare for Jesus’s coming. Author Jack Panozzo reminds us that as we prepare for Christ’s coming, bear in mind that Jesus comes not as a great ruler in flowing robes of gold and silk. He comes as a vulnerable child who requires our concern, nurturing, and care. Join the Legacy and Slaughter Library family in “rejoicing and preparing for the newborn who changed everything and gave new hope. “
