Magee resident and Mississippi author John Shivers will visit the Forest Public Library on Tuesday, August 6. The program begins at 5:30 p.m. for appetizers and a chance to meet the author, followed by a book talk and signing at 6:00 p.m.
Librarian Dianne McLaurin encourages local residents to support Mississippi’s literary talent by attending the local event. “Mississippi is rich with writers who find inspiration from their state’s roots and surroundings, and Shivers is no exception. His Mississippi roots date from 1839, and his appreciation for the rural Mississippi countryside is apparent in his books. This is a great opportunity to meet a tenured author who not only loves to write but also loves our state,” she said.
Shivers decided to become a writer at age 11; however, it took him 44 years to realize his dream of writing books. His first book, Hear My Cry, was released in 2004 and his 16th book, Weaving a Family for Christmas, was just published — Volume 2 of the Christmas Collector Series. Three additional books are in various stages of production, and of his 19 books, 14 are inspirational fiction, one is mainstream and four are mysteries. Most of the books are currently on display at the Forest library.
Shivers began his writing career at age 14, earning money writing articles for his hometown paper. At age 22, he was recognized as the youngest newspaper editor/publisher in the state of Georgia. Shivers is the winner of 17 professional writing awards, and he has edited and written for newspapers, magazines, and specialty publications. “I can’t imagine not writing,” he said, “but I also love reading — a love that began in the local library. As a young boy, I looked forward to my weekly visits to our small community library. My favorite genres, then as now, are mystery and history, and I especially like to weave the two together in my books.”
Another thread woven throughout Shivers’ books is the suitability of his novels, considered as clean fiction in reading circles. Shivers is a certified lay servant of the United Methodist Church and is currently serving as lay pastor at Raleigh UMC, Gasque Chapel UMC, and Pleasant Hill UMC/Double Church, all located in Smith County. He is married to Elizabeth McCallum of Magee. They have a daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren, along with two four-legged children, Callum and Rosie. His dedication to faith and family is evident in his inspirational writing.
“One of the many requests I hear as a librarian is the necessity for fiction that everyone can read. Shivers is one of those writers who creates interesting and believable story lines, while also maintaining a level of respect and sensitivity for the reader. Because of the subtlety of his craft, some call him a “wordweaver” — someone who uses his love of the written word to meet the expectations of the reader,” McLaurin said.
