Happy Thanksgiving
What do you suppose the first Thanksgiving was like? Remember, probably everything was cooked outside on an open fire. That meant no pies. Turkey and venison was probably cooked on a spit. It’s documented that the Indians and Pilgrims ate a meal together, each fixed food for the meal.
Then 160 years after that first celebration, George Washington made a proclamation on October 3, 1789 advising that both houses of Congress recommend to the people of U.S. declare thanksgiving and prayer be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many favors of God.
It was not until October 3, 1863 that Abraham Lincoln made a proclamation that the last Thursday of November be “a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our benefit Father so dwelleth in Heaven.” (Ann Swanson, Russell, Pa.)
I remember, back in my early childhood, we had a better meal that day and celebrated with relatives with true thankfulness! We had fresh food from our family farm. The only store close was about five miles away, transportation was either walking or mules and wagon. They only bought things like flour, sugar, salt and a few other things. Even with times like that, we were much better off than just a few years back during the “Great Depression.” (That was before my time) Things really begin to change when electricity was brought in by Central Electric Power Association. I can remember my Dad purchased a refrigerator before we got power. It sat, in the crate, on our porch until we could use it. Ice cream made in the ice trays was some kind of wonderful! A big change when the automobiles became available again. My Dad had a convertible auto when he and my Mom got married in the 1920’s. More change came after WWII.
My favorite recipe for Sweet Potato Pie. (3) good size potatoes, (1) can sweet Eagle brand milk, (3) eggs, (3/4) cup sugar, (1) teaspoon vanilla flavoring, (1). Stick butter or margarine, (2) pie crust. (I no longer make the crust, but I like the ones that are rolled, not frozen. If you buy it in pans you will need the large size). Combine all ingredients, put in unbaked pie shells. Bake 350 until done and enjoy!
If you shop local, you can now order your groceries from a couple of stores and pick them up at designated time. Also, one store has just opened an app that can be installed free on IPhone, Android phone, or you can use a computer to check their sale items. This past week as a bonus, with a $10 purchase you could receive a 4 lb. sugar. I have heard others say this is convenient as well as a savings, since we usually pick up things not on our list!
I pray that all will have a Blessed Thanksgiving and we will all give true thanks to God for those blessings!
