Our prayers are with the family of Mr. Michael Jerome Walden, Jr. who transitioned Tuesday, September 10th at Lackey Memorial Hospital. Michael was the son of Mia Walden and Michael Walden, Sr. He was memorialized Sunday, September 15th at Concord M. B. Church where Pastor Henry Patrick officiated. Rev. Willie Robinson delivered the eulogy. Other program participants were Mr. Willie Davis, Rev. Dr. Wayne Williams, Rev. Dr. Samuel Thompson, Richard Mack, Michael Walden, Sr., Tim Lewis, and Donna R. Evans. Please remember Mr. Walden’s children in your prayers, namely MahKyla, Michaella, and Michael, III. Wolf Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
We are sorry to learn of the death of Mr. Johnnie Lewis “Shug” Odom, a resident of Bedford Care Home in Newton, who transitioned September 10th. A beautiful homegoing celebration was held at his home church of Midway Freewill Baptist on Sunday, September 15th. Pastor Cory D. Bender officiated and delivered the spoken word. Mrs. Margie Odom was the ceremony guide and other participants included Revs. Larry Odom and Randy Lewis, and Mrs. Mattie Holifield. The Freewill Choir provided musical selections. Our prayers are with his family especially his brother Harold (Tommie) and sister Carol Wohner.
Our prayers are with the family of Mr. Eddie Rand, Jr. of Tougaloo. He transitioned Friday, September 13th. He was the nephew of the late Alderman W. L. Slaughter. Please keep his family in your prayers.

The executive committee of the W. L. Slaughter Subdivision Homeowners Association met Monday, September 9th at the W. L. Slaughter Memorial Foundation Library. Members present were Barbara Gray, Rita Wash, Lena Glenn and Mae Lizzie Jones. The next meeting is set for Monday, September 23rd at 5:00 p.m. at the Slaughter Library.
Legacy’s Save Our Youth through Community Action (SOYTCA) stakeholders met Tuesday, September 10th at noon at the Slaughter Library. Stakeholders reviewed their mission and discussed this year’s calendar of activities. Additional in-school mentoring program and school and community forums were discussed. Present were the following stakeholders, Henry Slaughter, Shirley Sykes, Shilina Pinkston, D. L. Bennett, Andrew Crudup, Elmer Lowery, Andre’ Hollis, Roy Lowery, Octavia Dixon, Will Jones, Constance Slaughter-Harvey and Dorothy Pinkston. The next meeting is Tuesday, October 1, 2019.
We enjoyed Revival Services at Sherman Hill U. M. Church where Rev. Dino Terrell was the speaker each night from September 9 – 11th. The revival theme was “Keep on Pressing.” Rev. Terrell was introduced by Sherman Hill U. M. Church Pastor, Rev. Arthur Maples. We appreciate the invitation to attend.
A “History of the Forest Rotary Club (Video History Interviews – 2012-2013”was presented to Forest Public Librarian Diane McLaurin Wednesday, September 11th following the Rotary Wednesday luncheon meeting by Vice President Lee McCarty and Constance Slaughter-Harvey, 2012-2013 president under whose administration the videos were made. Special thanks to Rotarian George Taylor for his assistance with coordination of this project.
We enjoyed the Youth Awards and Recognition Day program at New Bethel M. B. Church Sunday where Morton native and University of MS graduate Coach Shay Hodge was the guest speaker. He was introduced by Pastor Vincent Hopkins and challenged youth to keep God first in their lives, put forth their best at all times and refrain from bullying. He addressed the theme, “We Serve A Great God.” Other program participants were Myla Sanders, Virtasia Shepard, Laila Moore, Genesis James, Jordan Lyles, Angelia Cross, and Sheila Brown. Youth director is Angelia Cross and Rev. Vincent Hopkins is the pastor.
The St. Michael Catholic community celebrated the Vietnamese Autumn by fellowshipping at the Parish Hall and enjoying delicious dishes and beverages. A Children’s Creativity Contest was held and 13 youth entered their creative works of arts and crafts. Father Roberto Mena and Father Joe Dyer were the Contest judges. We appreciate the invitation to participate.

Legacy Education and Community Empowerment Foundation and Slaughter Memorial Foundation invite all Hawkins Middle School and Scott Central Middle School teachers to attend the Teacher Appreciation Tea Saturday, September 28th at 4:00 p.m. This special Tea will be held at the Slaughter Library on Jones Street. It marks the kickoff for the Enrichment Series which starts September 28th (birthday of W. L. Slaughter) through October 9th (birthday of Mrs. Olivia Kelley Slaughter).
