Community’s youth serve as 21st Annual Dr. M.L.K., Jr. Walk Marshalls
Our prayers are with the family of Evangelist Wanda Harvey Taylor who was memorialized Sunday at Pilgrim Rest M.B. Church in Brandon. She transitioned Monday, January 15th and was the mother of ReShad Taylor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sammie (Bobbie) Harvey and sister of Mrs. LaTasha Jones and Rev. Ava Harvey who officiated and delivered his sister’s eulogy. Please keep her family in your prayers.
A beautiful memorial was held for Mr. Wilbert Leon Beamon January 20th at Concord M. B. Church with Rev. Henry Patrick officiating and Mrs. Bobbie Hollins serving as mistress of ceremony. Others participating on the program were Revs. Henry Patrick and Reginald Pinkston, Dwuan Walker, Evangelist Crystal Davis and Beverly Ware. Apostle Kevin Battle provided the eulogy. Our prayers are with his family especially his wife, Barbara Beamon and children, Elaine, Lisa, Tisha, Wilbert, Antonio, Marco and Bruce. Evans Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Special prayers for our readers who are facing health challenges, namely, Lorenzo Pinkston who is on life support; Mrs. Dorothy Buckley Hayes and Mrs. Beverly Hollingsworth who are both at Lackey; Mrs. Nancy Hughes and Rev. Bobby Joe Pinkston both of whom are at St. Dominic; Abraham Buckley who is resting at home; Angela Warnsley who is on life support at UMMC, Mrs. Sammie Rigby, and Denise Jones.
Special thanks to those walkers who braved the cold weather on Dr. King’s Day to complete the 4-mile journey starting at the Slaughter Library. Girl Scout Troop #3205 leaders April Jennings, Natasha Smith, Tonya Pickens, Rhonda Carter and Amorie Gray; and Scouts Mikea Robinson, Jaden Singleton, LaNyah Singleton, NaTya Smith and Amiracle Turnich, served as marshals and Jerry Smith continued his 15-year role as Walk Driver. Thanks to Constance Burwell and son James, III (Tre’) who travelled from Jackson to continue their traditional participation. Other veteran walkers included Mesdames Martha Reed, Susie Jackson Boyd, Ester Perry, Bonnie and Bobbie Joe Lay, Martha and Robert Kincaid who continued their service as Walk photographers. Special thanks to all fraternity and sorority members and congratulations to Zetas who have participated in great numbers for more than five years. A very special thanks to Forest Police Officers who continued their tradition of providing traffic escort services. Thanks!!!

Slaughter Library Relay for Life Team Captain Cynthia Slaughter Melton reminds our readers that the team will celebrate 20 years of participation and service to the Scott County American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Original members of the 1998 Team are the late Helen Owens, Betty Jones, Constance Slaughter-Harvey, Amos Holifield, Vincent Jones, Chineta Perry, Sheila Youngblood Brown and Cynthia Slaughter Melton.
In next week’s column, Melton will announce plans for the 20th year Celebration. “Roasting” of all team members is one of the planned highlights. Further, each team member, and their anniversary date, will be featured. Special thanks to the entire community for the 20 years of support for the Slaughter Library Relay for Life Team. This Team was founded in honor of Mrs. Olivia Kelley Slaughter who lost her battle to sinus cancer in 1991.

St Michael Catholic Community celebrated the contributions of Mrs. Flo Chambers and Father Joe’s during the Retirement Tribute held Sunday, January 14th at Crudup Ward Activity Center. The diverse Catholic community turned out in record numbers to express appreciation and bid adios to Mrs. Chambers and Rev. Dyer. MS Catholic Diocese of Jackson Bishop Joseph Kopacz joined others in expressing appreciation to them. We salute Father Joe and wish him well in his next venture. We salute Mrs. Chambers and join others in thanking her for her 50+ years of service to our community.
