Our community is saddened by the death of Mrs. Iester Willis who transitioned March 20th. Our prayers are with her family and her Lynch Chapel U. M. Church family. Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, March 31st at 11:00 at Lynch Chapel U. M. Church.
Alderwoman Cynthia Slaughter Melton has received a clean bill of health following surgery in Jackson last week. She sends a special thank you to all who remembered her in prayer. Please continue to pray for her full recovery.
Please continue to offer prayers for Mesdames Flo Chambers, Mildred Guyse, Willanna Price, Evelyn Williams, Abraham Buckley and other readers. Please also remember Mrs. Francis Gray Holbert in your prayers who is hospitalized at Merit Hospital in Brandon. She is the sister of the late Mrs. Nadine Anderson.
The Community Bank family and friends celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Thomas W. Colbert’s leadership to the Community Bank and to Farmers and Merchants Bank. The celebration was “over the top” and was held at the Country Club of Jackson on St. Andrews Road.
Family and friends paid tribute to Colbert and wife, Ann Brand Colbert, for their years of dedicated service to the bank and to the community. Scott Countians were well represented and participated in welcoming Governor and Mrs. Bryant. Mrs. Kitty Colbert was one of the special guests and she enjoyed sharing a table with the First Family and the University of MS Chancellor and wife. Congratulations to Thomas W. and Ann Colbert for their faithful and effective service to us. Best wishes!
Members of the Health Is Wealth Luncheon-Lecture Series and Scott County African American Historical Society enjoyed a coordinated luncheon program held Thursday, March 22nd at the Slaughter Library. The theme of the luncheon program was “Effective Ways to Manage Arthur.” Presentations were made regarding effective methods of living with arthritis and displays, pamphlets, slides and magazines were shared.
Rev. Charles Watkins reminded participants of our rich heritage and suggested we review the home remedies of our foreparents. It was a very interesting and informative luncheon program. Participating in the luncheon program were Mesdames Rita Parker, Marquita Patrick, Lucille Patrick. Shonnette Kelley, Annie Lowery, Constance Slaughter-Harvey and Dorothy Pinkston, Rev. Charles and Ester Watkins, Roy Pinkston, Andrew Crudup and Henry Slaughter.
We enjoyed Ushers’ Day at Union Grove Church Sunday where Rev. Willie Robinson was the guest speaker. He delivered an inspiring message where he saluted ushers for their roles in opening the doors of the churches and serving as a crucial part of the foundations. Mrs. Cheryl Robinson was the Program Guide and Mrs. Rita Parker Johnson assisted in this role as President of the Union Grove Usher Board.
Plaques and other expressions of appreciation from the Union Grove Usher Board were presented to the backbones of the church including Mesdames Peggy Hughes, Ruby Crudup, Laura Jackson, Stella Smith, Lucille Patrick, Martha Reed, Eleanor Longmire and Katie Patrick. Program participants included Timothy Patrick, Glenda Viverette, K. J. Parker, Luella McConnell, and the youth mime and praise team led by K. J. Parker.
Others recognized by the Ushers were Rev. Wright, T. J. Flowers, Ms. Bobbie Thompson, Ms. Victoria Brown, Jasmine Benton, Shantay Ford, Jamie Gammage, K. J. Parker and others. Mrs. Rita Johnson was surprised with a plaque and a standing ovation for serving as an Usher for 50+ years. We enjoyed the program and especially enjoyed the message from Rev. Robinson. Rev. Rochelle Wright is the pastor.
The SCTS/ETHHS Alumni Association Planning Committee met Sunday at the Odessa V. Graves Building to further plan for their July Reunion. Present at this meeting were President Susie Jackson, Carolyn Knowles, Juanita Jones, Marquita Patrick, Minnie Holifield, Mattye Evans, Nettie Ware, Esther Johnson, Dorothy Pinkston, DeWaun Walker, James Clark, Ernest Love, Booker Mitchell, Vincent and Linda Solomon, and Carolyn Macon.
Iona Prep students enjoyed Saturday’s challenge sessions of jumbled words and missing vowels. They also continued their chess challenges. Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Henry (Shirley) Slaughter for conducting these sessions. Participating in the sessions were Mykeria Hayes, Jamarius Wash, Tierra Marbuary, Shaniya Brown, Sierra Marbuary, and Nyah Davis. Thanks also to Louise Washington and Rex Watts.
There will be no Iona Prep session this Saturday in light of Holy Week. All participants are encouraged to continue to observe the Holy Week and Easter Season.
Mt. Olive M. B. Church will hold its Spring Revival during the second week (9-13) of April at 7:00 p.m. nightly with Rev. Hosea Hines on Monday; Rev. Walter Patrick on Tuesday; Rev. Anthony Robinson on Wednesday; Rev. A. D. Lewis on Thursday; and Rev. Marcus Mann on Friday. On the first Sunday in May at 1:30, Rev. and Mrs. Bell will be honored during the Pastor’s Anniversary Program. Rev. Sheldon Thomas will deliver the special message.
