Scott County Attorneys offer Free Legal Clinic June 7th
Our hearts are saddened by the death of Mrs. Betty Patrick, long-time florist, and owner of Studio of Flowers. She previously worked with Studio of Flowers and Petals Floral Shop. Mrs. Patrick transitioned the day before Mother’s Day Saturday, May 12th and will be memorialized Wednesday, May 16th at 11:00 at the Wolf Funeral Home Chapel in Morton. We will miss Mrs. Patrick and will remember her pleasant smile and demeanor. Our prayers are extended to her family, especially her daughter and co-worker Vonda Patrick Tullos and grandson. Please keep Betty’s family in your prayers.
Our prayers are with the family of Mr. Billy Townsend who transitioned last week. Memorial arrangements have been set for Saturday, May 19th at 12:00 p.m. at Union Grove M. B. Church. Evans Memorial is in charge of arrangements. Please keep his family in your prayers.

We enjoyed the special Health Is Wealth and Historical Society Mother’s Day Joint Luncheon Meeting held Thursday, May 10th at the Slaughter Library. The special guest, one of the original Slaughter Boy Scouts Officer, was Julian Parker who shared tips on self protection for mothers and others. It was a most enjoyable event. Participating in this Mother’s Day Healthy Eating luncheon meeting were Ester Perry, Rita Parker, Bonnie Floyd Stowers, Marquita Patrick, Roy Pinkston, Bobbie Hollins, Matasha Harper, Lucille Patrick, Shonnette Kelley, Henry Slaughter, Andrew Crudup, Bobbie Ringo, Annie Lowery, Louise Washington, Dorothy Pinkston and Constance Slaughter-Harvey. As we have done for the last six years, we continue to issue the healthy living challenge to our readers.
Congratulations to Rakita Helen Annyce Butler and Jade Olivia Slaughter Morgan who received their juris doctorate degrees from MS College School of Law Friday. We wish these young graduates and others our very best wishes.
Jade is the daughter of Carolyn (David) Fuqua and the late John Morgan. She is the granddaughter of the late W. L. and Olivia Kelley Slaughter. Jade was featured on Channel 16 for having completed law school and raising 5 children at the same time. She received several academic honors. Way to go Jade!!!!
Rakita is the daughter of Dr. Annyce Campbell and the late Jackson Police Detective Cleon Butler. Rakita, a cancer survivor, was diagnosed with cancer while at Tougaloo College and now volunteers with the American Cancer Society. She was president of the MCSOL BLSA. Way to go Rakita!!!
The Excel Learning Center staff continued their expression of appreciation to volunteers by inviting them to the Excel Volunteer Walk of Fame event. Stars covered the Excel entrance Friday, May 4th in preparation for the special event to honor and thank volunteers for their work which makes it possible for the Excel Center to operate and provide much needed services. In addition to the wonderful hospitality and a Walk of Fame exercise, the food was absolutely delicious. Volunteers were gracious in their acceptance of the appreciation gestures expressed by Excel staffer. Thanks Excel for the wonderful work you are doing in our communities! Special kudos to Sisters Eileen, Rita and Pat!!

The Recovery Ministries, Inc. sponsored the 2018 Women’s Luncheon and Conference Saturday, May 12th at Roosevelt State Park. WLBT anchor Mrs. Maggie Wade Dixon was one of the speakers who addressed the conference participants on the theme, ‘Courage for the Christian Woman’. Other speakers included Dr. Brigetta Turner, Ms. Chelsea Campbell, Minister Stephanie Fortune Brown, and Sisters TeeLisa Hennedy and Cadesscia McClendon. Opening remarks were provided by Elder Irish Kennedy Smothers and her daughter, Mrs. Ayana Cole, was the mistress of ceremony. Among those attending and enjoying the program was Forest alderwoman Cynthia Slaughter Melton. Special thanks to Elder Kennedy-Smothers for such a timely and challenging conference/luncheon.
Constance Slaughter-Harvey was the graduation speaker for the 2018 Coahoma Community College commencement exercise Saturday, May 12th at the Pinnacle in Clarksdale. She challenged the 452 graduates to “Be the Change You Want to See in this World.” While there, she toured and enjoyed the Clarkdale Downtown Blues’ District. Her special guests were Constance and James, III Burwell. They enjoyed the Mother’s Day weekend.
