We are saddened to learn of the death of veteran Forest sanitation truck driver Eddie “Big Ed” Graffree who passed Tuesday, May 22nd. Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, May 26th at Concord M. B. Church at 11:00. Our prayers are with his family, especially his wife, Lottie Jean, and their three children. Please keep his family in your prayers.

Our prayers are with Mrs. Johnnie Louise Lamb who is presently hospitalized at St Dominic Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. Please remember her in your prayers. Please also continue to remember other readers who are facing health challenges including Mr. Percy Parker.
Legacy’s Hawkins Middle School Mentors honored mentees (Legacy Change Agents) who completed the In-School Mentoring program during Honors’ Day Monday, May 21st. Students receiving Legacy Medallions and Certificates were 5th graders Tiffany Alonzo, Shaniya Brown, Akeriya Canady, Nyah Davis, Janya Dillon, Alexis Garcia, Headi Garcia, Mykeria Hayes, Seirra Marbuary, Teirra Marbuary, Akil Rankoin, Zamiah Patrick, Ariel Smith, Melinda Toledano, and Shaniya Walker. Sixth graders were Veonshay Harper, Mikayla Holifield, Neveah Jackson, Satiya Johnson, Da’Riyah Mayers, Myashia Myers, Jon’Taesha Ormond, Jacqueline Williams and Jonesia Woodfox. Fifth and Sixth grade boys receiving Legacy Change Agent honors were Bryan Felix Vasquez, William Spence, Adam Shoemaker, Jacob Wicker, Jose Lopez, Izaveon Burns, David Hilton, Jamarius Wash, Iserael Megal, Cornelius Maurice Sanders, Carlos Garcia, Anias Paterson, Dakota Easter, Jabarius Traylor, Malachi Rayford, John Simon, Logan Henry, Jay Reed, Taylor Jenkins, Cole Reid, J.J. Speaking of a royal wedding, Ms. Rochelsey Symone Thomas became the gorgeous and charming bride of Dedric Kyle-La’Ronn McDonald Saturday, May 12 during their beautiful wedding ceremony held at The Cotton Market in Richland. It was an event to remember as love aroma filled the room when Ms. Thomas became Mrs. Dedric Kyle-La’Ronn McDonald! Dr. Larry Weathers officiated and presided in the marriage ceremony. Matron of honor was Tiffany Smith and Maids of Honor were Jerica Hughes and Audrianna Walker. Best man was Montrel McDonald and Bridesmaids were Lauren Powell, Onnah Cross, Rachel Lockhard, Ingrid Lewis, and Khadijah McDonald. Junior Bride was Ava Grace Cross. Groomsmen were Montez Paterson, Quentin Greathree, Luis McLeod, Michael Dukes, Brandon Siggers, Keenan Tillman,and Lorenzo Hollis. Parents are Johnny Thomas and Ledora and Sammy Benton, and Elijah and Rosemary McDonald. Grandparents are Mesdames Hattie Mae McDonald and Allenteen Watkins. Zariana McDonald was the hostess and Zycharius McDonald and Jamari Thomas were the ushers. Her sister Roxanne Cross and Stacey Rasco were the coordinators. The couple spent their honeymoon in the Bahamas. Congratulations to former Slaughter Scout Rochelsey, and Dedric – Mr. and Mrs. Dedric McDonald!!!
Congratulations to James Arthur Emmanuel Burwell, III (Tre) who celebrated his First Communication Sunday, May 20 (Pentacost) with Father Jeremy Tobias officiating. Mass was conducted at Christ the King Catholic Church in Jackson. He was surrounded and supported by his parents, James and Constance Olivia Burwell, granny Constance Slaughter-Harvey, aunt Cynthia Slaughter Melton, cousins Teselyn and Reginald Funches and daughters Caelyn and Courtney Funches, cousins Lori Martin and sons, Emir and Derrick, Jr., Delores Lee, Greta Harris, Roy and Ann Lowery, Dorothea Van Buren and Eugene Cooley. Following Mass, they enjoyed fellowshipping at Simply Southern. Congratulations James and welcome to the Lord’s Table!
Members of the Forest Community Head Start Class of 2018 celebrated their Completion Night at the Forest Elementary Auditorium Monday, May 21st. Center Administrator Sheila Y. Brown introduced the students who were completing their Head Start experiences and heading to the public schools. All students participated in the program through their Head Start pledge, class presentations, and opening and closing songs. Cayden Jones, Shamiya Johnson and Charles Yancy brought greetings, meditation and the farewell speech. “Train the mind and the body will follow” is the class theme and motto. Their blue and gold class color scheme was most attractive.
Congratulations to these 128 students and our best wishes as they enter the world of ‘big school.’ Special thanks to the Head Start Center administrator, clerk, family community workers, translator, janitors, cooks, teachers, substitute teachers, and especially the parents, and volunteers.
We applaud these young students who have been prepared by the Head Start family to enter the public schools and to make a difference. Let’s continue to support these youth who are transitioning from Head Start to the public schools of our community. Way to go and kudos to each of them!!!
