Community offfers retirement tributes to court administrator Carolyn Cooper
Our prayers are with the family of Mrs. Betty Hornsby, wife of Mr. McArthur Hornsby and mother of Mrs. Mary “Shaun” (Kenny) Morgan and Terrance Hornsby. She transitioned Tuesday, June 26th in Jackson. Memorial services were held Saturday, June 30th at Wolfe Funeral Chapel in Morton where Rev. Floyd McConnell officiated and delivered the eulogy. Please continue to remember the family in your prayers.
Our prayers continue to be with the family of Mr. Percy Parker including his wife, Mrs. Dora Hughes Parker, and children Jerome, Percy, Jr., and Jasmine, and siblings.
Second District Chancery Court Administrator Mrs. Carolyn Cooper was honored with a Retirement Reception Wednesday, June 27th at the Scott County Courthouse. Members of the Scott, Newton and Jasper County Bar Associations hosted the special event and presented her with a Cruise to Jamaica. Tributes were made by Chancery Court Judge David Clark, Scott County Bar President Constance Slaughter-Harvey, Newton County Bar President Robert Logan, and Jasper County Bar President Lillous Ann Shoemaker. Special thanks to the reception committee members Renee Crimm, Gail Lee, Constance S. Harvey and Yolanda Lovett. Mrs. Cooper was overwhelmed and expressed appreciation to those in attendance including attorneys who hosted this event. Her husband, Tom, and children, Jeffery, Devin and Casey Hunter, and grandchildren, were also in attendance. Other family members and friends cheered her on as she thanked attendees.
Co-workers from other counties as well as Chancery Court clerks from Scott, Newton and Jasper were in attendance. Former court reporter, Nicki Rogers and husband were on hand to share retirement tips. It was great seeing Meridian attorney Leigh Ann Key who, despite her health challenges, wanted to show her appreciation for Mrs. Cooper. County and local officials were also on hand to show their appreciation. Congratulations and best wishes in your well deserved retirement Mrs. Cooper!!!!
We’re glad that Legacy Mentee Jacqueline Williams has returned home from her summer visit in California. She missed her family and friends and is ready to participate in the Legacy Summer CARE camp.
Concord M. B. Church members celebrated the summer by sponsoring a Vacation Bible School for the youth Monday, June 25th through Friday, June 29th. Youth enjoyed the spiritual experiences as well as the educational exposure. In addition to the meal provided though the Crudup Ward Center, church members provided delicious food for the parents and other adult volunteers. Mrs. Delora Nelson was the Vacation Summer School director. Rev. Henry Patrick is the pastor.
The Mt. Mariah Church family continues to provide religious education following their District Congress during the week of June 18th. Last week, the church family sponsored their annual Vacation Bible School with a theme of “God’s Squad.” According to Superintendent Andrew Crudup, the motto was “Special Agent In Action.” More than 50 children enjoyed activities and more than 25 adults served as volunteers to assist in the spiritual educational activities. Deacon Roy Lowery and Musician DeAnte Spann served as coordinators. Special thanks to the Crudup Ward Activity Center for the provision of food to the children. Rev. Ralph James is the pastor.
The Chockie Odom and Cora Banks Odom Family Reunion was held Friday, June 22nd through Sunday, June 24th. Friday night activities were conducted at Midway Freewill Baptist Church and Saturday morning, family members attended the MS Civil Rights Museum in Jackson. Later, they enjoyed a Family Picnic at Roosevelt State Park in Morton. This was a most enjoyable family outing and the youth loved the swimming and outside fun. Saturday night, they enjoyed Family Supper at Santa Fe/Penn. The Reunion concluded with church services at Midway Free Will.
Constance Slaughter Harvey enjoyed celebrating her birthday before, during and after the June 18th event. She started by celebrating with her grandson (Tre’) and his classmates by picking blackberries and blueberries and later celebrating with Berdie Harvey, daughter Constance (James) and Tre’ on Sunday. Legacy summer interns greeted and surprised her with balloons and gifts. She and sister, Cynthia, enjoyed a delicious birthday meal at Garden Patch. She also enjoyed the beautiful flowers, birthday cards, Legacy Change Agents specials, and other gifts. What a privilege to celebrate 72 years of blessings with family, friends, and children!
Legacy Mentoring Parents Engagement Group met Sunday at the Slaughter Library and completed their fundraising plan and summer traveling tour project. Participating in the meeting were James and Keanna Harris, Louise Washington, Shirley Sykes, Henry Slaughter, Flossie Hayes Ford, Natasha Slack, and Bettie Robinson. The next meeting is Sunday, July 8th at 4:00 at Slaughter Library.
