We are saddened by the death of Mr. J. C. Spivey who transitioned September 27th at Lackey Hospital. A beautiful Celebration of Life was held for him Saturday, October 5th at Mapp Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Walter Patrick officiating and delivering the eulogy. Mrs. Shirley Thames Horton provided the musical prelude and other program participants were Rev. Sheldon Thomas, Shelia Robinson, Shannon Moore, Sister Graves and Trilandra Edwards. Our prayers are with his family especially his children and siblings.
Our prayers are with John Herron, siblings and other family members as well as all who knew and loved the former Scott County Election Commissioner Mrs. Alice Livingston Herron. She transitioned and was remembered Saturday, October 5th at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home. Mrs. Herron was one of the longest serving public servants in Scott County. For more than 41 years, she provided services and assistance to Scott County citizens. Please keep her family in your prayers.
Diahann Carroll made history when she became the first African American female to win a Tony Award in 1962 and the first African American female actress to star in her own television series, “Julia.” She transitioned Friday, October 4th and she was a very classy, intelligent, talented and beautiful lady.
Voters and candidates gathered and enjoyed lunch and a forum Saturday, October 5th at the Forest Services Center. A moment of silence was observed in memory of the late Mrs. Alice Herron, Scott County Election Commissioner for more than 41 years. Following this recognition and tribute, candidates shared their platforms to a most attentive audience. Participating in the forum were Gubernatorial candidate David Singletary; Attorney General candidate Colonel Jennifer Riley Collins; Public Service Commission – Central District candidates Brent Bailey and DeKeither Stamps; Senate District 31 candidates Mike Marlow and Tyler McCaughn; Representative 75 candidate (incumbent) Tom Miles; Representative District 78 candidate Joe Bradford; Supervisor Beat 1 candidate (incumbent) Jackie Bradford; Supervisor Beat 2 candidates Joe McGee and Frederick Spencer; Beat 5 Supervisor candidate Tony Sanders; and Constable – Post 1 candidate (incumbent) Richard Prestage. It was a most informative forum which was sponsored by the Committee for a Progressive Scott County.

St. Michael Catholic Church parishioners celebrated St. Michael’s Day Sunday, October 6th at Gaddis Park. Father Roberto Mena conducted Mass and was assisted by Deacon Edwin Santos. Following Mass, Vietnamese, Hispanic, American and Southern dishes were enjoyed as well as games and great hospitality.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. John (Elaine) Hughes who celebrated their Golden Anniversary Saturday, September 28th at McClain’s in Brandon. It was a beautiful event and the bride and groom were all smiles. Their children, Mrs. Renita Ragsdale and John Hughes, Jr., were the host and hostess for their parents.

Happy belated birthday to Mrs. Easter Robinson who celebrated her 99th birthday and received special tributes at the 136th Church Anniversary at Galilee M. B. Church Sunday, October 6th. Guest speaker was Rev. James Owens of Louin. It was a wonderful program. Rev. Lee N. Crosby is the pastor.
Special congratulations to former Forest resident, Mrs. Henrietta Horton, who now resides in Clinton with her daughter, Mrs. Barbara Longmire. While living in Forest, she distributed meal boxes at the Senior Nutrition Site sponsored by the East Central Area Council on Aging. On her 105th birthday, Mrs. Horton was honored by the Jackson City Council with a plaque and resolution for her productive life. Following that official ceremony, she enjoyed her birthday party with cake, ice cream, balloons, and friends. The celebration was held at the Baptist Adult Day Care in Clinton. Happy birthday Mama Henrietta!
We enjoyed the spiritual challenges, hospitality and delicious meal during the Church of Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith Family and Friends Day. The theme was “Fellowshipping in Unity and Love” and the mistress of ceremony was Mrs. Zeola Williams, wife of Bishop Billy C. Williams, Sr. Other program participants were Eric Hunt, Mesdames Bettie Robinson, Roma Robinson and Shameka Mason. The choir and youth skit were enjoyable. We appreciate the invitation extended by Mrs. Bettie Robinson.
Legacy’s Health and Wealth and Historical Society entities are meeting Thursday, May 10th at the Slaughter Library at noon. This meeting is held in honor of the Library’s founder, Mrs. Olivia Kelley Slaughter.
