Clean-up is March 9-11
As Black History Month continues, I couldn’t let it go by without recognizing Black History in our state including our county. Our very own and fellow coffee talk writer, Constance Slaughter-Harvey. She was the first female to serve as the President of the Student Government Association at Tougaloo College. She was the first African American female to receive a law degree from the University of Mississippi. She was the first African American to service as Judge in Mississippi. She has a long list of accomplishments that include human rights. I worked for her 20 years ago. I had no idea who I was working for at the time. I just knew I admired her. I admired her confidence. I admired how she spoke with authority yet respectful. As time passed and I learned who I worked for, I couldn’t believe that she was from Forest, MS. I rarely heard of people from Forest making this type of impact. Needless to say, she impacted my life in a great way. It was truly an honor to work for her and with her. I would like to take this time to thank her for all the contributions she has made for African Americans in the state of Mississippi, and in Forest.
We had a wonderful time, during the Black History Program at Sylvester UMC this past Sunday. Mothers of the church, Corine White, Bernice Evers, Fannie Bradford, and my mom Mary Bobbitt talked about how things were when they grew up. They spoke of having to work in the cotton field all day and having to burn wood in a heater in the middle of the house to stay warm. Although, I have heard these stories before, it was great for our younger generation to hear the stories. Thanks to Nikki and the Sylvester UMC Family for a great program. Union Grove UMC will have our Black History Program on this Sunday, you are welcomed to come out and celebrate with us.
Please don’t forget the plans for the “Great American Cleanup” schedule for March 9-11 in the Steele Community. On Monday, March 11, we will have a conclusion meal at Union Grove UMC at noon. Please show you support by donating the items above or donating your time.
