Our hearts are heavy following the news of the transition of Rev. J. F. McRee who passed Saturday, October 20, 2018 at the home of his niece in New Orleans. Rev. McRee was pastor of Lynch Chapel for many years and was very active in the civil rights movement. He was one of the original founders of CDGM Head Start in the early 1960’s. Additional details will follow in next week’s column.
Our community is saddened by the transition of Lt Col, USAF, Retired Ronald Carlton Walsh, Sr. (Dr. Walsh) at his home Wednesday, October 17th. Burial Mass was held at Wolfe Funeral Service Chapel in Morton Sunday, October 21st. Rev. Charlie Deaton officiated and was assisted by Lay Worship Minister Chris Baker. Our prayers are with Dr. Walsh’s family especially his wife, Mary Jo, and children, Kelly Leiden, Betsy (Ronald) Corkran, and Ronald C. (Katherine) Walsh, Jr. Please keep his family in your prayers.

We are sorry to learn of the death of retired Army Captain Larry Darnell Beamon who transitioned September 29th in Kansas City. He was a graduate of North Scott High School ‘69 and Alcorn State University ‘73. Memorial services were held Saturday, October 20th at Midway M. B. Church with Rev. Wesley Griffin officiating. Other program participants included Larry Beamon, II, Dr. Lindsay Beamon-Scott, Bobby Beamon, Marcell Frost, Gail Beamon, and Lacey Abdel-Khaliq. Please remember his family in your prayers, namely Lacey (Mikail) Abdel-Khaliq, Lindsay (Austin) Beamon-Scott and Larry D, Beamon, II.
Mr. Albert Moore is resting well at Lackey Hospital and was in good spirit as his wife continued to pamper him; Mr. Samuel Hoye is recuperating at home; his daughter-in-law, Shawanda Matheny is also recuperating at home; Mrs. Flo Chambers is recovering following a fall; Deputy Julian Parker has been released from Baptist Hospital and is recuperating at home; and Mrs. Patty Reynolds continues to recuperate at home and is making significant progress. Please continue to remember other readers who ae experiencing health challenges.
It was good visiting with Legacy REAL graduate Itavius Burks who graduated from Scott Central as an honor student in 2017. He received a scholarship to MS Delta Community College in Morehead and continues to excel in the academic world. We are proud of Itavius who is majoring in accounting and intends to become a Registered Nurse. He is an excellent role model to his brother Xavier Hughes who is a 10th grade student at Scott Central. Kudos to Itavius! Join us in applauding Itavius for following his dream.
Congratulations to James Meredith on his honor as one of the University of MS Alumni Hall of Fame honorees. He was one of the five alumni honored Friday, October 5th at The Inn in the Gertrude Ford Ballroom. Other honorees included U. S. Senator Thad Cochran, Howard Gerlach, Mac Haik, and Vernon Kelley, III. Congratulations to all recipients.
We enjoyed having Ms. Aterykah Hughes in our office as part of the ‘shadowing program’ at Sebastopol High School. She was most impressive and very committed to helping youth. We welcome her presence and assistance in the future.
We enjoyed visiting with former Scott County educators, Principal Dr. Sharon Hoye and Assistant Principal Darrin Gray. It was so special watching them interact with the students and other members of the Pilate Junior High School family. We’re proud of them and wish them well.

We enjoyed the Customer Appreciation Day Friday at Community Bank where customers and Forest High School Bearcats were treated to hamburgers, hot dogs, pop corn and other delicious treats. It was a wonderful event and was well received by customers and others. Special kudos to Community Bank for highlighting and appreciating customers and supporting our Bearcats!
In recognition of National Head Start Week, the Forest Head Start family and supporters will celebrate with their annual program Tuesday, October 23rd. The activities culminate with the release of balloons. Kudos to Center Director Sheila Brown and other members of the Head Start family!
As an expression of appreciation, the Lynch Chapel U.M. Church family honored their pastor, Rev. Shirley Wilder and husband Sunday during National Clergy Appreciation Month. The program was followed by a Pastor Appreciation Reception and the fellowship and food were delicious especially the Pastor Appreciation Cake.
Local schools will partner with Legacy and Save Our Youth through Community Action (SOYTCA) and hold forums on Anti-Bullying during National Anti-Bullying Month. Scott Central students will participate in a forum Monday and the following Tuesday, junior high students at Bettye Mae Jack will participate the Anti-Bullying Forum. The events will be covered in this column next week.
St. Michael Catholic Community parishioners celebrated the feast of St. Francis Wednesday, October 3rd, the eve of St. Francis’ day. Franciscan Sisters Rita, Eileen, Brenda and Pat shared the works and wisdom of St. Francis especially his creation works. Following the program, a reception was held in the parish hall.

Legacy’s Health is Wealth and African American Historical Society will hold the Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon Thursday, November 1st at noon as the Slaughter Library.
