Wow, what a difference a week makes. This past weekend was absolutely beautiful. Especially coming a week after that bitter cold windy one.
Everything is beginning to leaf up, bud out, and pollen up too, I suppose. My pear and plum trees are blooming and sitting outside Saturday afternoon I could see something off in the woods that had white blooms on it as well.
Like spotting a perfect cedar for Christmas off of a dirt road in a pasture, the blooming tree was much further out in the woods than I had thought and the sawbrier, poison ivy, and dead fallen pines made getting to it harder than I had planned, but get to it I did. I’m not sure why, though, I still don’t know what it is unless it is one of those wild cherries. I just had not remembered seeing it in the past and it is pretty big, so I felt a need to check it out. Plus it kind of looked like Dogwood from a distance.
Walking in the woods these days can be hazardous. Besides those previously mentioned snags that latch onto the bare legs of one wearing shorts, all the dead pines still standing are literally an accident waiting to happen.
Sitting outside, wife Danny and I kind of duck and cover when a breeze blows and the top of one of those dead trees pops off and crashes to the ground and they are not even that close by. But when you are in the woods, well that is a different story all together. Projectiles are everywhere!
You are reading this, though, so obviously I survived.
Danny had run to the store when I went on my hike, so had I gotten crushed into the thicket below my feet, she might have determined that I just “up and runt off!” At least until I started smelling I suppose.
Truth be known, I had full intentions to work in the yard Saturday, but when I turned on my motivator switch it motivated me to go sit in one of the outdoor recliners we got for Christmas. It was really our first opportunity to try out the chairs which have been sitting out back all bundled up in their covers and protected from the elements since December 25.
While sitting there, laid back in the warm sunshine, I think my motivator switch battery ran down because I was unable to get motivated to get back up except to snag a cool drink and some lunch.
I tried charging it back up over night and when I switched it back into yardwork motivator mode on Sunday afternoon, it did the exact same thing that it did Saturday. I suppose it was because the weather was so nice, and that there was no need to cover those recliners at night and I think a magnetic pull had attached itself to my butt and one of those seat cushions. Same thing happened to Danny and the other chair.
I did pry myself away from the chair long enough to blow off a pile of leaves, move a few plants out into the sunshine, and I think I did something else productive, but could not swear to it at this time. Oh, I did pick up one large limb and discard it into the woods.
I would have burned some leaves but we have been advised by the powers that be not to do any burning due to a bit of a breeze, humidity, and drought. I took that to heart, not being one to go against any advice that encourages one to not work on a pretty day.
I’m thinking that was a darn good idea, following instructions that is. Even the birds thought it was a good idea. The woodpeckers were pecking away at those dead trees, and little tiny tweety birds were tweeting to all get out. At one point a couple of big ole buzzards were circling overhead and I couldn’t help but wonder what, or who, they might be setting their sights on — me or Danny.
Shortly they were gone and that meant a moment or two of dozing off in the breeze might be in order so doze off in the breeze I did...several times...but I can not say in complete honesty how many times make up a serveral these days. I know it is more than a couple.
In the end, I’ve pretty much come to the conclusion that it wasn’t my motivator switch that I was switching on but more likely my good for nothing switch and I’m here to tell you it works real good. Real, real good.
You know, we don’t call it the Big Fat @$$ Sitting Area just for the fun of it. We’ll try again this weekend.
Sitting? Working? I’m not sure which one just yet.
