Bearcats hold off Gators in tight 36-35 game
Scoring 29 points in the third quarter, the Forest Bearcats clinched a hard fought victory over Leake Central last Friday night in Carthage.
The Gators scored twice in the first quarter to lead 13-0 as time ran out. Both teams had one touchdown in the second and the Gators were up 19-7 at the half.
But in the fourth, the Bearcats got hot scoring 29 points to the Gators 16 and the Cats’ 36-35 lead at the end of the third would be enough as both teams were scoreless in the fourth.
The Bearcats, now 2-2, travel to Clarkdale Friday for the 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
The Morton High School Panthers claimed a Homecoming victory last Friday night against inter-county foe the Lake Hornets.
In the defensive match up, the Panthers held the Hornets to one touchdown in the second while the Lake defense didn’t allow a touchdown through the half.
Morton came out and scored in the third while the Hornet were scoreless and the Panthers claimed the victory with a fourth quarter touchdown and two point conversion to end the battle with a 15-7 win.
Morton, now 3-1 travels to Kemper County Friday night for the 7:00 p.m. kickoff. The Hornets will be at home Friday night where they celebrating Homecoming with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff against Pisgah. The Homecoming Queen will be crowned during pre-game festivities beginning at 6:30.
The Rebels of Scott Central also claimed a Homecoming victory last Friday night defeating Raleigh 26-20.
The Rebels now possess a 3-1 record. They play next when they host Philadelphia for a 2A Region 6 battle on Friday, Scott Central will play a Tornadoes squad coming off a 2-0 non-league loss to Kemper County. The Tornadoes record now stands at 0-4.
Hopes were high in Sebastopol last Friday night where the then 4-0 Bobcats hoped to keep their winning streak alive hosting 2019 state runner up Lumberton.
The hopes would be dashed, however, as the Panthers came into town hot and held the Bobcats to only two touchdowns, one in the second and one in the fourth.
Panters found pay dirt in all four quarters and ended the evening with a 38-15 victory.
Coming up next, the Bobcats face the Salem Wildcats (Tylertown) in a 1A Region 4 contest, Sebastopol will attempt to upgrade on its 4-1 season record. The Wildcats go into the contest with a 1-3 record after their 36-12 league loss to Richton.
