Dr. Jim Ashmore, former Forest School graduate:
Last week’s paper had a great write up on Dr. Jim Ashmore’s life. ( I was playing High basketball at same time he was, only at Good Hope High School.) Inasmuch as I remember him I would like to share information about his ball playing. He was at Forest High School for his senior year where he was ranked most intelligent, most versatile, lettering in baseball, basketball and football. He attended Mississippi State in 53-57, graduating Summa, Cum Laude with a Pre-Med degree. During his time at “State” he broke their basketball records and three SEC records; was first known jump shot shooter in the country; was first All American player; named SEC most valuable player, his senior year; was drafted by the NBA by the Boston Celtics and was selected second string point guard to Bob Cousy, but decided to play in AAU Basketball League, so he could attend Medical School half of the year. At the beginning of his next 6 years he married the love of his life, Beverly Jo. He attended the University of Tennessee Medical School at Memphis and Denver, Colorado. There he played basketball for the Denver Truckers and was named AAU “All American” and graduated in his medical field with all straight A’s.
Positive Advice: Some people embrace their golden years, while others become bitter and surly. Life is too short to waste your days on the latter. Spend time with positive, cheerful people, it’ll rub off on you and your days will seem much better. Time and good friends are things that become more valuable as you get older.
Having plans seems like a good idea — until you have to put on clothes and leave the house.
Husband called wife, on the phone: “Today, no need to cook. I will bring food from Second Wife.” Husband came home, knocked on the door, wife opened door. That’s the only thing husband remembered. Husband is in ICU where as “Second Wife” is the name of a particular restaurant.
“My 3 year old daughter asked, “Where does Poo come from?” To make it simple, I said, “You just had breakfast?” She answered, “Yes.” I said, “Well the food goes into your mouth down into your tummy. Our body takes all the good stuff it needs out of the food and what’s left goes down into your bottom. When you go to the toilet that comes out Poo.” She looked confused, stared at me in stunned silence, for a few seconds. Then she asked, “and Tigger?”
