Our prayers are with the family of the late Mr. Samuel David “Sammie” Harvey, husband of Mrs. Bobbie Kersh Harvey, and the son of the late Joseph and Arette Harvey of Brandon. A beautiful Memorial Service was held on August 12th at Pilgrim Rest M. B. Church in Brandon. His son, Rev. Ava Harvey, officiated and delivered his father’s eulogy. Mr. Harvey was the last of the B & S Gospel Singers who performed regularly in and around Scott County. He was the brother of the late Jimmy Harvey of Forest, and the uncle of Constance Harvey-Burwell. Please keep his family in your prayers, especially his wife, and children, Rev. Ava Harvey, and Mrs. Tasha Harvey Jones. Dean Memorial Funeral Home was entrusted with his final arrangements.

Congratulations to Dr. Melanie R. Nelson on her recent appointment as the new Superintendent of the Forest Municipal School District. Her educational career spans 31 years in public school education which includes elementary principal, and Director of Elementary Education and Federal Program in the Biloxi Public School District, an “A” rated school district. We welcome Dr. Nelson!
Congratulations to Monsignor Elvin Sunds on the Fiftieth Anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood. The Mass of Thanksgiving was held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Madison. Monsignor was Catholic Charities Director for more than ten years. It was a special and beautiful celebration.
Kudos to James Burwell, Jr. who won the Bennie G. Thompson Sporting Clays Challenge Sharpshooter Award during the CBCI 2023 MS Policy Conference in Biloxi. James is Chief Sales Officer at Liberty Rent and represented the National Apartment Association (NAA).

Scott County Alcorn State University Alumni Association (SCASUAA) members provided a meal and refreshments to the Alcorn Braves during their scrimmage game on August 12th at Lorman. Members traveling to feed the players were Charles Longmire, Marcus Holbert, Wayne Kincaid, Peggy Sanders, Sheila Brown, Linda Youngblood, Evelyn Nicks, Greg Nicks, Mattye Evans, Angela Moore, Derek Qualls and son from Atlanta, and Sammie Benton. While there, many styled and took photos with Coach “Air” McNair. They appreciate the donations and assistance from friends and family and other ASU chapters.
Legacy Education and Community Empowerment Foundation, Inc. (LEACEF) was incorporated August 11, 2011, and has continued to provide much needed services in its 15-county service area. LEACEF’s Outreach Programs include: Emergency Response (LER), Advocacy Workshops (LAWS), Connections Youth Leadership Development, Change Agents of Reading Summer Camp (CARE), Books-4-LUV, Health Is Wealth, Teacher Award Grant (TAG), Preppin 4-School, Scott County African American Historical Society, Save Our Youth Through Community Action (SOYTCA), and Work and Educational Scholarship Tradition (WEST).
On Saturday, August 12th at the Slaughter Library/Legacy Center, Staff Members, Volunteers, Board Members, Connection Scholars, Health Is Wealth Members, Scott County African American Historical Society Members, Donors, and other Change Agents celebrated the 12th Anniversary. They enjoyed sharing experiences with other Legacy Change Agents and helping those in need, including people affected by the tornadoes in Rolling Fork, Amory, Louin, and other areas. Connection Scholars shared their experiences concerning the Scholars Program and the C.A.R.E. Camp. It was a day filled with fun, fellowship, future planning, and food. Among those attending were Board President/Founder Constance Slaughter-Harvey, Board Treasurer/Incorporator Verna Myers, Board Member Dr. Stephanie Rhodes, Legacy Office Manager and Evangelist Eloise Reed, Dr. Rhonda Kelley, Supervisor Jackie and Mrs. Dorothy Bradford, Alderwoman Cynthia Slaughter Melton, Mesdames Rita Parker Johnson, Susie Jackson Boyd, Bonnie Floyd Stowers, Tyler Brewer, Mr. and Mrs. Zachery Taylor, Zaniyah Brazzle, James Burwell, III, Raigen Walker, Autum Jones, Michael Walden, III, and Mahkyla Walden. Executive Director and Co-Founder Constance Olvia Harvey Burwell expressed appreciation to donors and volunteers and advised that at the conclusion of the Anniversary Celebration, Legacy Youth Connection Leadership Program would begin. Youth enjoyed popcorn, frozen pops, and other goodies. Special appreciation to all for their presence and to Community Bank for donations.

We are pleased to join in and support this Celebration. The late Mrs. Olivia Kelley Slaughter was one of the original supporters and wrote “acting” plays for the Singers. On August 11th, family and friends of Constance Olivia Harvey-Burwell surprised her with a Birthday Luncheon at Char’s Restaurant in Jackson. It was a “real surprise” and all in attendance enjoyed the food, fun, laughter, and camaraderie.
