The St. Michael Catholic Church Community celebrated St. Michael’s Day Sunday, October 6th at Gaddis Park. Following Mass, parishioners enjoyed delicious and authentic cuisine (Vietnamese, Hispanic, American, Thai, etc.), games, fellowshipping, face painting, and great hospitality. Special appreciation was given to Liz Edmondson, Amy and Andrew Le, and Cindy Tran for their great work and contributions to the Church Community especially with the youth.

The Annual Naomi Dean Williams, R.N. Memorial honoring and remembering “September Babies” Celebration was held September 27th at Lackey Convalescent Home. Alderwoman Cynthia Slaughter Melton, celebration founder in honor of cousins Naomi Dean Williams and Mrs. Olivia Kelley Slaughter (October baby), provided ice cream, birthday cake, and gifts to all September babies. Those remembered were Naomi Dean Williams, Alderman W. L. Slaughter, Connie Stewart, Elva Jouce Husband, Barbara Ormond, Sharonda Hudson James and William Edwards, Jr. Those honored were Maurice McClendon, Minnie Holifield, Susie Ickom, Brian Baskin, Courtney Ella Funches, Terry Porter, Roxanne T. McBride, Rejell Aultman, Jeanette Sawyer and Dr. Melanie Nelson. During the celebration, Melton discussed Scott County Times articles and posed a quiz teaser — “What was the former name of the Wing Dang Doodle?” After several inquiries and discussions on memory lane, Mrs. Aultman offered the answer — “Broiler Festival” and was the prize winner. Thanks to Lackey Convalescent Home staffers for their assistance. The October Babies Birthday Celebration — TBA.
Congratulations to Claudia Maron who was recently crowned St. Andrew’s Episcopal School 2024-25 Homecoming Queen. She is the daughter of Change Agents David and Elizabeth Maron, Esqs, and the granddaughter of local Change Agents Judge Tom and Mrs. Norma Ruth Lee. Way to go Queen Claudia!
We enjoyed spending quality time with Change Agents Mrs. Lucy V. Moore and her cousin Bettye Anne Lovelady and discussing local history and memories of fun activities in the Highway 80 neighborhood. Delicious homemade tea cakes were also enjoyed.
Special thanks to supporters of the Black’s Chapel Baptist Church Youth Building drive that is being coordinated by James “Tre” Burwell and his family. The building will house facilities that save our youth, such as an indoor basketball court, and a dance studio. We are hopeful that local churches will follow suit and open their doors to youth and work to “Save Our Youth.” Pastor Sheldon Thomas was a pioneer with his “Sho 4 Real Ministry” years ago. If other churches or organizations are working to save our youth, please contact Legacy at 601-469-0990 so we can offer our assistance.
Legacy’s 3rd Annual Mothers’ Love Forum was held Sunday at the Slaughter Memorial Library/Legacy Reading Center as a love expression to the late Mrs. Olivia Kelley Slaughter, founder of the Slaughter Library. The forum is one of several activities held during the Slaughter Enrichment Series which started last week with a kickoff at the Wang Dang Doodle (September 28th birthday of W. L. Slaughter) and will end October 9th (the birthday of Mrs. Olivia Kelley Slaughter). Sharing memories of their mothers were Change Agents Verna Mayers (Dorothy River Lee Bully-Cotton Mannie), Corshaela Pinkston (Ardrena Pinkston), Susie Jackson Boyd (Katie Epting), Glenda Graham (Mattie Butler), Patty Ward Odom (Estella Moore Ward), Martha Kincaid (Annie Lee Harper), Joyce Graham (Clara McClendon), Bonnie Floyd Stowers (Flora Jane Evans Hornsby), Renna Battle (Pauline Gilbert Adams), Elois Reed (Etoile Pace Graham), Cynthia Slaughter Melton and Constance Slaughter-Harvey (Olivia Kelley Slaughter), Yolanda White (Eloise Gray White), Kathern Crudup Qualls and Debra Crudup Lowery (Catherine Crudup), Janet Nicks Williams (Bettye Viverette Nicks), Dorothy Strong (Lula Wash Wilson), and Joann Pinkston (Ella W. Odom). Following reflections and memories, the common attributes of our mothers were kind, humble, strong, hard workers, always available to offer assistance and love, protective of their children, education encouragers, God-fearing, and beautiful. Attendees enjoyed refreshments during the forum and the favorites were homemade tea cakes and amber punch. Mothers will continue to be celebrated each day.
