Dear Editor:
One of my favorite articles to read each week is that of Mr. Clyde Morgan. I am humbled by his service, awestruck by his intelligence and dumbfounded by his ability to write so eloquently. His articles always cause me to reflect, especially his recent “Diogenes” series.
After reading his final installment I took the time to think about my beliefs. I thought about what I have believed as a Christian and about what I have preached from the pulpit for over 30 years as a pastor. Then I compared my own beliefs with those put forth by Mr. Morgan before asking myself, what if I am wrong? Well, if I am wrong then so be it, I have nothing to lose. I have lived a great life, have a great family and have helped others improve their lives by offering them hope through Jesus Christ. Hopefully, I have made a positive impact on society and I will leave this world with no regrets.
But, what if Mr. Morgan is wrong? After considering what he had to say, with all due respect to this heroic and honorable gentleman, I’ll stick with what I believe. Hopefully you will too.
Come to think of it, I have never heard anyone say they were delivered from addiction to drugs or alcohol, they no longer steal, beat their spouse, that they’re a “real” father/mother or their family is whole and at peace because of Diogenes — a Greek Philosopher who was a beggar and slept in a large ceramic jar in the streets. Neither have I ever heard anyone say they now have hope because of Diogenes.
I have never witnessed one life improved because of Diogenes or his teachings, but I have seen many lives changed because of Jesus. Through the ages, millions upon millions can attest to the positive change Jesus has made in their lives. With all due respect Mr. Morgan, you keep Diogenes and I’ll happily and faithfully stick with Jesus. I believe I’m on the safe side of this one, and it is good to know I am not alone.
