The superintendent will take over the Starkville Oktibbeha School District on July 1
Scott County School District Superintendent of Education Dr. Tony McGee has tendered his resignation effective June 30. McGee will be taking over the helm of the Starkville Oktibbeha School District on July 1.
In a letter posted to the school website, SCSD Board President David French said, “The Scott County School District School Board has accepted Dr. Tony McGee’s resignation as Superintendent, effective June 30, 2022. The school board has begun the process of searching for a new superintendent for the district. The school board would also like to thank Dr. Tony McGee for his years of service to the children of the Scott County School District.”
McGee said Monday evening that it was a difficult decision to make concerning the move. “I would like to thank the Scott County School Board, staff, instructional leaders, and the families of Scott County for allowing me to serve the boys and girls of this community,” he said. “It has been a blessing to work with so many great staff members for the last seven years. Scott County is blessed to have so many caring adults working to provide the best opportunities for children. It has been a very difficult decision to make the move to the Starkville-Oktibbeha school district but I will always cherish the friendships I have made in Scott County.”
McGee was hired from a pool of 11 applicants to lead the SCSD in July 2015. He had previously held the same position in the Kosciusko School District for seven years.
McGee was the first appointed school superintendent in Scott County after the district was taken over by the state in 2014 and the then board and superintendent were removed from office. A conservator was named to manage the district under state control until a new board was elected in the spring of 2015. One of their first duties was to hire a superintendent and McGee was the unanimous choice.
“In Kosciusko, we always held a high standard for academics, athletics and arts, so we had a community there that really held us to a standard of excellence,” McGee told the Columbus Commercial Dispatch last week after the Starkville Oktibbeha School District Board of Directors announced his hiring. “In Scott County, we’ve been able to add early childhood education with pre-k, after school programs with the 21st Century Learning grant, courses like AP Physics and expand our dual credit and higher level courses for our students. We’ve been doing a lot of work expanding our facilities, so it’s been a lot of good work over the last 14 years.”
McGee will take over for Eddie Peasant, who is leaving the district June 30 after five years. McGee was among the finalists in 2017 when Peasant was hired.
