Fire Safety Education Officer, Tammy Peavy hosted an educational demonstration at the Forest Library last week during the summer reading group meeting.
Peavy spoke to the children and attending parents about recognizing fire and smoke in the house, smoke alarm placement and maintenance, avoiding smoke by getting low on the floor, identifying two exits in the house in case of fire, and establishing a meeting location for the family outside of the house.
Peavy used her props to demonstrate how to feel the door for heat before grabbing the doorknob.
Peavy had a Forest Fire Department member, Tad Waltman suit-up in his gear demonstrating the protections of the suit and its personal alarm for allowing other firefighters to locate him/her in a smoke-filled space.
Peavy then led the group behind the library to the “fire safety house,” which is dressed to resemble the interior of a house and fills with simulated smoke. The smoke is a vapor like that used in fog machines on Halloween.
The vapor creates a simulation of how it looks when there is a fire, and the children are encouraged to exit through the back window of the trailer, assisted by State Deputy Fire Marshal, Pete Adcock.
