Pentecost
A few days ago Christians celebrated the day of Pentecost It marks the beginning of the Church and the accomplishment of one of Jesus’ promises. When our Lord knew that He was going to die soon, He said to His disciples: “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you.” (John 16:7 ESV)
And it happened, fifty days after His Resurrection and a few days before His ascension. The Helper is the Holy Spirit who was revealed to the disciples of the early church. “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:1-4 ESV)
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, who exercises the power of the Father and the Son in creation and redemption.
John the Baptist’s words about baptism of fire and Spirit were accomplished too: “John answered them all, saying, ‘I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.’”(Luke 3:16 ESV)
The baptism with the Holy Spirit is the pouring out of the Spirit’s power confirming that Jesus has risen and is seated at the right hand of the Father. Pentecost should not be celebrated as an important day only, but it needs to be our testimony of change, obedience and faithfulness. The Holy Spirit’s fire needs to be shown in our daily lives through the gifts we have received and leading unbelievers to Jesus’ feet. This fire is always available for those who want to serve God under the purpose He has for each one.
The Holy Spirit calls in different ways — sometimes dramatically and other times in a peaceable way. It is very important to be patient as we listen to or feel His power and presence. Remember that the Word has power and for some believers it will show up through speaking in tongues, which some Christians don’t believe those signs but, those who have the experience will tell that it is a privilege to feel such an outstanding peace and edification. This is a gift that has not boundaries for any race or age. Have faith in Jesus Christ only and see.
At Pentecost the Holy Spirit reincarnated in the disciples and all the written Epistles in the New Testament are proof that God inspired them to do it. Pentecost is Jesus’ seal for His work and we are all called to continue His mission.
