Midway History
This week highlight will be about Delie Stowers Shepard. I am a graduate of North Scott High School. I received my high school diploma after 11 years then went on to obtain my Bachelors and Masters from Jackson State University. I graduated on Saturday and went to work as a teacher of high school sciences (Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Physical Science) on Wednesday. Taught full time for 28.25 years then retired. Went to truck driving school, obtained my licenses to drive big trucks. Worked half years for South Leake High School for 6 years. Taught gifted students science in North Carolina for a year. Now, I ran for office and won and on my third term as Election commissioner of District 5.
I am the biological mother of three boys and the acquired mother of three boys who I raised and call my sons. All six of my boys are truly loved. I have 14 grandchildren.
I am a member of Midway M. B. Church and we do a breakfast program of giving each Sunday. The money received from donations of the Black Historical Banquet will be used to remodel the kitchen and Fellowship Hall. The kitchen has not been remodeled since it started with Head Start over 40 years ago. We, reach out and do charitable contributions of helping others.
Midway M. B. Church will celebrate its First Black Historical Banquet on February 22, at 6:00 pm. There are many far and near who have been contacted to be a part of this historical program. If you or your ancestors were born in Midway, married someone from Midway or work for the good of Midway please attend this Banquet.
Did you know: The students who integrated Scott Central as the first black students to attend Scott Central were from the Midway Community. All of those students have college degrees and one is a Psychiatrist. A psychiatrist is a person who obtained a college degree, a medical degree (MD) and then an internship in psychiatry. Usually it takes 10 to 12 years after high school to obtain a Physiatry degree.
One of the honoree’s obtained a degree in Physics and is still working as a mathematician. Did you know you have a writer, a great lawyer and producer all wrapped up as one whose ancestral home is from Midway.
I was told one day this statement. “I am moving out of state so my kids can have a better chance of success in life.” My answer,” If you look around you will see many success stories. It is not where you go to school or live; it is what you want to do with your life.” You can see children who went to big prestigious school who are not doing anything with their lives and there are some who went to little schools, who are great achievers.
Congratulations to George Lee Smith and Mallory Williams. Hope you has a wonderful day.
