Henry Odom the First
Midway M. B. Church will be celebrating its 136 Year Anniversary on September 18, 2022. The Anniversary Program will be held during regular service, starting at 10:30 a.m. Tam Banks will enlighten everyone on the Church’s history during its 136 years. Rev. Wesley Griffin is the pastor. The church was founded in 1886.
Henry Odom the First’s, as I relate to him, last child was born in 1895 who was named Delia Lucille Estella Maria Viola Odom. She was my grandmother. He had a lot of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren named Henry. He was the father of 17 children by his full-blooded Choctaw wife Bethany. Henry the First and his sister Amy had walked here from North Carolina after the slaves were freed by night in 1865. They settled in a community and named it Midway. It was about midway between Lone Pilgrim, Little Rock, and Harmony. Come and enjoy the service, and learn something about the Odom’s, McClendon’s, Stowers, Beamon’s, Floyd’s, Cannady’s, Slay’s and Nickols.
Breakfast will go out on this Anniversary Sunday to all our sick and shut in in the community. Be sure to give me a ring to request a breakfast tray. My number is at the bottom of my column. Please get the request in by Friday.
A copy of “From Whence We Came,” by Denise Beemon Christian will be on display and for ordering, cash or Cash App only. The book is an Educational and Pictorial history of the beginning of the Midway Community. Information about the first families and as many pictures as she could find showing the early families. Denise is the grandchild of the late Early Beamon and Ellen Beamon. They misspelled her father’s name, the late Curtis Beamon to Curtis Beemon, so therefore she has always been a Beemon, although the correct spelling of her family’s name is Beamon. Those were the days of mid-wives and some of them could not read and write to spell names correctly or get the correct date on birth certificates.
The Alice Floyd Family Reunion will be held November 10-13, 2022 here in Scott County and the Midway Community. Alice was the mother of Early Beamon, Dock Floyd and Mal Cannady. In their lifetime their land was been the now Chockie Odom-Beamon Road and Midway-Odom Road.
