Travelin’, visitin’ and such: During the recent travel adventure enjoyed by Brian and Frisky Roland, they visited with Frisky’s Best Friend (Heart Sister), Beth Boozer Churchwell. Friends since they were five years old and throughout grades Primary through Senior year and attending Pulaski Elementary (primary-eighth) and Morton High School sealed the bond. Beth now lives in Cleveland-Avon, Ohio near her son Stan. This time together was very precious to Frisky, Brian, Beth and Stan. An unusual occurrence during the time together was the fact that a tornado passed directly over her home with warning alarms sounding. Thankfully it did not descend there and all was safe, but we found that this was very rare for that area.
Morton MHV Club met on Wednesday, October 2 at Sam’s diner for their business meeting and a catered “burger” buffet provided by hostess Frisky Roland. Kathy Hicks, staff manager at Hudspeth Residential Homes in Morton was the special guest/program presenter. Club members welcomed her update on the activities and needs of the residents, some of which were provided by the Morton MHV Club. A business meeting was conducted by president, Sig Miles and members: Bobbie Hodges, Florence Measells, Jerry Miles, Sharon Smith, Judy Stegall, Kathy Warren and Helen Watkins were present for the reading of minutes and financial reports and any votes appropriate for future donations, etc.
Sittin’ and thinkin’: October-from the word octo, “eight”, because this had been the eighth month of the early Roman calendar. Why do leaves change color during the spectacular fall season? The main reason is not autumn’s chilly weather, but sunlight — or rather the lack of daylight. Day and night are roughly equal in length on the autumnal equinox in late September, and afterward nights are growing longer. The reduction of light tells deciduous plants that it’s time to stop gathering energy and get ready for the dormant season — winter. Once the waning hours of daylight trigger these changes and the green chlorophyll is gone, other pigments begin to reveal their bright faces! Carotenoids give their brilliant yellow and orange colors; Anthocyanins are found in deep red and purplish leaves; The presence of Tannins means leaves will turn brownish or tan.
