Sittin, and thinkin’: Our nation has just paid honor and tribute to those who paid with their lives to provide that we reside in “The Land of the Free and Home of the Brave.” After reading the report of the Sullivan Brothers saga. While undertaking to do the above I fondly remember a very impressive/emotional time from my early childhood (about 6 years old). My family took my great aunts, Miss Mary Miles and Mrs. Maggie Miles Smith to the local movie theater which was a very rare outing for them and the last “Picture Show” for the two wonderful ladies. The movie was the 1942 “Sullivan Brothers” depiction of their patriot devotion to America costing the lives of all five brothers in the same naval tragedy. Needless to say that is one of my most poignant memories and the profound sadness that we felt. We three generations were reduced to tears and almost unable to leave the theater. Of course efforts/laws have been made to the effect that no siblings/immediate family members can serve in one military action together. But that brave dedicated family later traveled and spoke to many groups sharing their experience and encouraging others to join the military and serve their country. Such is why we honor the Sullivan’s and all who paid the ultimate price.
