Sittin,’ and thinkin’: As the many shiny school buses are once again rolling along the streets/roads/highways (some even powered by electricity) seeing them brings memories of other days. The buses were usually contracted to serve the routes and were owned by the driver. Most were wooden bodies with benches along the sides and center of the long homemade vehicles. Heat was provided by a wood burning stove and fresh air came through the screenless window openings with only canvas curtains for protection from rain, sleet or snow. The drivers and their routes remembered for the Pulaski Elementary School were: Mr. Preston Derrick southern route almost to Smith County, Mr. Bud Boozer - eastern route almost to Homewood and Mr. Leslie Hunter - north route (Frogtown) and Mr. J. C, Johnson western route and back to Pulaski to pick up those 9th-12th graders to Morton High School. The condition of the roads made it very difficult to pick up and deliver that precious cargo. The structures were very boxy and in one case just a wooden box on a pickup truck bed (Mr. Hunters passengers called it the “Chicken Coop.”
Now to go down memory lane, remember some of these family names and think of those students mentioned who now have children, grands, great grands, etc. speeding along in those previously mentioned shiny buses on paved streets, highways and interstates. Family names remembered: Amison, Boozer, Beatty, Derrick, Hannah, Parkman, Smith, Magee, Stevens, Morehead, Roland, Warren, Harmon, Vaughn, Stokes, Harrison, Crotwell, Fox, Davis, Dunkin, Neal, Green, Livingston, Marler, Moore, Chestnut, Nelson, Powell, Hunter, Keeton, Lindsey, Risher, Faulkner, Massey, Westberry, Lewis, Miles, Rogers and Johnson. If someone was left out of these long ago fond memories, please forgive. This columnist has enjoyed this trip…hope you did.
