She enjoyed having some family members with her as they beamed with pride at the talent of their daughter/ granddaughter, Madyson Warren, performing in the leading role (Cinderella) and all supporting performers in their designated roles.
Morton UMC welcomed native son Drew Herring, Assistant Pastor at Philadelphia Methodist Church, to “Come Home” and lead in the congregational hymn service and perform a beautiful/inspiring special vocal. He and his lovely family, wife Ivette, son Nathan and infant daughter Briella and of course, parents Gordy and Debbie Herring were there in support of Drew. This special Sunday service was held in the Fellowship Hall during the once monthly Informal gathering. How special to have this time together…Come back soon.
Sittin’ and thinkin’: Watching the present day Cheer Squads in all levels of participation, their skills of calisthenics, gymnastics, power, dance, etc. are fascinating/scary and amazing. Just leads this former cheerleader down memory lane. Instead of the 12-20 or so team members of today we had 5 girls. If I remember correctly only one of the team could do a cartwheel (much less a lift or split). Our blue ankle length full circle skirts were fully lined with gold satin and were complimented by matching Gold satin tights (which we dared to show off while twirling at the end of our grapevine dance). To be even more bold…we led in the favorite cheer of the football team and student body which was…“Beans, Peas, Tomato Soup Morton Panthers-Rooty-Toot-Toot”. Can you readers believe we got away with that? I miss the team and fun we had. Since we were not allowed to ride in a bus and most of the team didn’t have access to the family car, my father, Happy Loeb, converted our Chevy station wagon for our travel to away games. He had wooden benches built to place along the sides so that the five of us could go as a team. Only two of that team of “Cuties” (Ann Baker Williams, Carolyn Fountain Crechelle and Sara Sims Jackson are deceased), yours truly and Charlene Jones Cooper are the survivors.
