Sittin’ and Thinkin’: Last week Vietnam Veterans Memorial Day was commemorated. This sad time in American history brings a vivid memory to this columnist. A personal friend of my husband and I, Tom Collins, was a Prisoner of War there for seven years. He and another POW were confined to extremely small confining cages the entire time. They were the ones credited with creating the tapping codes for communication between them. During this time Tom’s wife Donnie, a determined spouse, went to Washington, DC to force our government to recognize that MIA (Missing in Action) and POW American military personnel were serving our country. Her very young son and their son that they were expecting endured without their father who did not return throughout those seven years. Many years later while touring the Military Museum in Columbus, Georgia, I was shocked to see one of the cages, the size and construction. God bless all Military Service Personnel and their families past and present. We should honor the Vietnam Veterans every Day!!
