Robert Merlin Chipley, Sr.

Mr. Robert Merlin Chipley, Sr. age 89, passed away on December 31, 2017.

Merlin was born in Singleton, MS to Robert and Cloma Chipley.

Mr. Chipley moved to Lake after retiring from Civil service at Keesler Air Force Base. He was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Lake where he was active on the deacon board for many years. He taught Sunday school and served in numerous other capacities in church. He loved his family and had many friends in his community. Merlin spent his life helping family and others in any way he could.

He is survived by son, Robert M. Chipley, Jr. (Gerri) of Eugene, OR; grandson, Jonathan McDonald Chipley of California; brother, Ben Chipley (Mary Nell) of Germantown, TN; sister, Shirley Williams (Marion) of Athens, AL.; a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Ken Chipley, Quinn Chipley, Newton Williams, Franklin Williams, John Keith and Marcus Peagler.

Honorary Pallbearers were Danny Edmonds, Jimbo Harvey, Ed Amis, Marion Williams, Granville Freeman, Mike Gibbs, Chuck Hawthorne, and Abner Usry.

He was preceded in death by Robert and Cloma Chipley, wife, Anita Chipley, and daughter, Nancy Chipley Paull.

Visitation was held Thursday, 4th of January, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Lake, funeral followed. Rev. Scott K. Thomas II, Mr. Jerry Lewis, and Rev. Ken McLemore officiated. Burial was  at Antioch Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Forest, Mississippi.

Merlin’s favorite charity was the First Baptist Church of Lake Building Fund and Youth Program.
