McElroy House Grand Opening held
Newton Historical Culture Committee presented the Grand Opening of the McElroy Hoye House this past Thursday. The members of “Fabulous Fitness” of First Baptist Church of Forest (of which I am an attendee) were given a special invitation to attend by Beverely Rhodes. This was her Great, Great, Grandfather’s house. Following the ribbon cutting, guests were invited to walk through the Hoye House and also enjoy a light lunch. It is a “One of the oldest residential structures in the city. It dates back to 1861 and is a Mississippi landmark.”
I understand Newton hopes later on to have this open where tours can be arranged. One beautiful cake tier plate caught my eye, in part of the house that Beverely supplied the items on display. I have a similar one is my reason to question the history of it. I was told that during the Civil War, when the Yankee soldiers were getting close with their burning of properties, the owner had his slaves to dig holes in the dirt and put their prized possessions it. They later dug it up and this plate was in that collection. It will be interesting to go back and be able to hear more of the history this house holds. It is a grand place with beautiful furnishings of that period of time! Newton has nine other listings on their self guided tour map.
EBC NEWS: WOM collecting items to assist school nurses as they prepare for the new school year. Items listed are band-aids and Lysol wipes. Youth Hangout night Friday, June 29th at Bro. Do you know that WD-40 has many uses other than a squeak fixer? It can be used to renew faded plastic patio furniture, unstick Lego bricks and stacked glass wear, protect leather boots, loosen stubborn zippers, causes squirrels to slide off bird feeders, softens stiff baseball mitts, removes dead bugs from car grilles and cleans oil spots off the driveway. (I have heard of some people using it to stop knee pain too — I am not recommending this as I haven't tried it.)
It was good to see little Miss Caley Eichelberger, daughter of Suzanne and Lance Eichelberger of Forest, performing as a “Little Princess” on the Miss Mississippi Pageant. One day she may be in that seeking the crown of Miss Mississippi!
I heard on the Christian radio news that 83% of the children shown in the “Detention Camps” were not separated from their families as told on national news. According to their news, they were carried to the border by their parents and sent in to our country as illegals. We are at a point in our society that we have to take the news media, with a grain of salt, as the old saying goes! We are about to the point of being where we know the new media is lying because we see their lips moving! President Trump is trying to get our border’s secured to allow people who want to come in legally a path to follow! My prayer is with him!
It is told that Illegal refugees, coming into our country, get $3,874. under the Federal Assistance Program. Most American’s Social Security checks are $1,200. Something is bad wrong with this picture! When I am grocery shopping and notice immigrant’s shopping carts filled with the finest foods available and they pay with EBT cards it is very upsetting. Most of our young couples cannot afford to have a “house full of children” but most of them are having many children! I will take my “band box” down and try not to notice next time I’m in line with them.
Joke of the week: “An old man purchased a new Corvette convertible and left the dealership taking off down the road getting up to 80 mph. He sees a Highway Patrolman coming up behind him so he floors it hitting 100, 110 and 120 mph. He is ‘blue lighted’ and pulls over and stops. The patrolman said, ‘Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes and today is Friday. If you can give me a reason for speeding, that I have never heard before, I’ll let you go.’ The old gentleman replied, ‘Years ago my wife ran off with a State Trooper. I thought you were bringing her back!’ The Trooper replied, ‘Have a good day!’”
SCAM NOTICE: old scams are reappearing according to AARP. (1) “You get a check in the mail with instructions to deposit — you deposit and bank accepts it as being good. You are told to take some of the money and test the money transfer system, at a local store. Your instructions may be to purchase a reloadable or gift card and send pictures of card or numbers on the card. Fast forward days or weeks to an unhappy ending. The bank tells you the check was fake. Now you have lost your money! If you are asked to deposit check and send part of that money, you will be caught in a well planned scam. Other scams to watch out for is calls from the IRS, Virus on computer and clearing house telling you have won millions of dollars. We have had a person in our area that was scammed by a so called carpenter. We need to check out that person’s background references and never, never pay money in advance to anyone.
As our population grows older it is harder to cook balanced meals. We need a meal plan of staples in our house that gives proteins and not empty calories. Some recent suggestions call for keeping boiled eggs in refrigerator, keeping canned tuna fish or salmon, salad fixings including canned garbanzo beans and cheese. Peanut butter on a banana is good too! Protein is a must for aging bodies. A protein drink is available in many flavors and many have no sugar added. Premiere is my choice.
Have a God blessed week and share with others!
