Our prayers are with the family of young Kyngston Mann who died September 5th. He was the son of Aniyha Lay and Jaden Mann. His funeral is Saturday, September 20th at11:00 at Little Rock M. B. Church. Mapp Funeral Home has been entrusted with his final arrangements.

The Scott County MHV Lunch & Learn Training was held September 9th at the MSU Extension Service with County Coordinator Rayne Arnold welcoming attendees. Louella McConnell provided the blessing. Following the luncheon, Simpson County Extension Coordinator Amada Blakeney demonstrated, in a most interesting manner, the art of making detergent. Cluster Club members present were Dorothy Strong, Dessaree Bradford, Cynthia Slaughter Melton, Mary Lofton, Connie Wash and Louella McConnell. Health Is Wealth Stakeholders met Thursday, September 11th and paused to remember those whose lives were lost during the 9-11-01 bombings, and to remember the contributions of grandparents. Mrs. Susie Jackson-Boyd provided prayer. A delicious lunch was provided by RN Tamatha Qualls-Harris and her mother, Mrs. Hattie Thompson. RN Qualls-Harris delivered her “Prevention of Suicide” presentation, reminding attendees of the importance of attention to the causes and elimination of stress in this busy world. Participants discussed the pearls and tips provided by Mrs. Harris. Those attending were Cynthia Slaughter Melton, Lorraine Dozier, Rita Parker, Bobbie Ringo, Patty Odom, Melissa Barney, Martha Kincaid, Sherry Moore, Shyria Bobbitt, Susie Jackson-Boyd, Rhonda Kelley, Hattie Thompson, Tamantha Qualls-Harris, Constance Slaughter-Harvey and Norma Roman.
Following the Health is Wealth meeting, stakeholders in Scott County African American Historical Society met and reviewed their agenda of action. Among those attending were Susie Boyd, Rhonda Kelley, Patty Odom, Lorraine Dozier, Rita Parker, and Melissa Barney. The Cluster Club’s September meeting was held on the 11th at the MSU Extension Service. Dorothy Strong was the hostess, and she served a delicious meal and provided gifts for each lady. The blessing was offered by Louella McConnell. The business meeting was conducted by President Carolyn Macon. Other members attending were Louella McConnell, Dessaree Bradford, Mary Lofton, and Cynthia Slaughter Melton.
Congratulations to the Alcorn State University’s marching band members, the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite, who performed at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on September 14th during the halftime of the New Orleans Saints versus San Francisco 49ers. Kudos to the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite!!!
September babies were honored during services at Lynch Chapel UM Church on Sunday, September 7th. Each received a “Snack Bag of Joy” donated by Alderwoman Cynthia Slaughter Melton in memory of Mrs. Olivia Kelley Slaughter. Those honored were Minnie Holifield, Maurice McClendon and Jamisyn Givens. Members are looking forward to honoring “October Babies” on October 5th. Thanks to Dr. Kelly Ellis for assistance. Rev. Walter Roberts, Jr. is the Pastor.
Family and Friends Day at Church of Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith provided a great connection between “then and now.” An engaging exchange occurred between the younger participants and the experienced individuals. Pastor Billy C. Williams opened the Saturday, September 13th gathering with prayer. Crystal Hunt was the Mistress of Ceremony. Scripture was provided by Eric Hunt, and Bettie Robinson and Roma Lee Robinson extended the welcome. Pastor Williams delivered a spiritual message highlighting the occasion and Constance Slaughter-Harvey shared reflections and thanked members for opening their church to her on several occasions. Winners of gifts were Paula Patrick, Constance Slaughter-Harvey, DeWayne Parrott, Gwen Mann, Billy Williams, Jr., Mildred Lindsey, and Dessaree Bradford. Special thanks to the Kitchen Committee members, Mesdames Roma Lee Robinson, Bettie Robinson, Crystal Hunt, Natasha Slack, and Gwen Brinston, a Leake County resident who enjoys reading our Scott County Times column.
We enjoyed visiting with Mrs. Pearlie Stallings who was home visiting her sister, Mrs. Dessaree Bradford. She enjoyed the Scott County hospitality and the loving environment. Thanks to all for the love and making us feel at home especially Pastor Billy and Mrs. Zeola Williams. Good to see several Legacy Change Agents including one of Legacy’s Scholarship recipients Mykeria Robinson. Thanks to Mrs. Bettie Robinson for the invitation.

Slaughter and the 9th is the birthday of the late Olivia Kelley Slaughter. This is the 26th Annual Enrichment Series. Additional details will follow.
